Family car??

I heard the Multitronic was a nightmare too, hence why i'm looking at manuals now [shame as loved having an auto in the Prius].

Narrowed my search down to 2009+ cars now too as they had a refresh before the new 2011/12 version.

Want to get the 140bhp version for the lower tax band and insurance then maybe get a remap if it's so bad - but as a Dad of 2 tots, i no longer drive like a loon.

Seriously? The current BMW cabins are light years ahead of what Audi are making right now.

In some peoples opinions. I agree with Nordberg - having a large number of both brands in the car park in the pool, I prefer the Audi cabins. Having said that, the new 3'er and 1'er are a LOT better than the previous gen ones IMO, Audi still better.

The interior is a very personal choice - I forget where but a recent review of an Audi, I think RS6 said something along the lines of the cabin is up to the usual Audi class leading standard.

I'm with MrMe on this subject - many people think BMW are a bit spartan and low-rent because they don't have buttons everywhere.

The reality is they're (the Fxx series of BMWs) absolutely spot on - the materials quality is there, the build quality is there - but most of all, it's all very ergonomic and intuitive.

I've spent a fair bit of time in an A5 over the last few months, as a colleague helping with my training has one - it feels no more upmarket than a Passat in there.

Personal choice, we have several passat estates all 13 plates, and I have no idea how you think an a4/5 cabin is no more upmarket than a passat imo.

IMHO the quality of materials in BMW interiors is the main thing that lets them down. They don't have the solidity or tactile qualities of the Audi's in my experience. I do think they drive better than Audis on the whole, and are comparable in looks. They are as ubiquitous as Audi which makes their "prestige" image a bit ironic to say the least....

I gave the Saloon back after the 24 hour test drive. Liked it very much but decided I need the Avant which might be a stretch financially.....

I had a poke about in a new M5 over the weekend, i'm not sure how anyone can come to the conclusion the interior is inferior to an Audi?

Genuinely confused by that, there's no comparison, ok so asthetically there may be some debate and personal opinion, but in terms of materials, build quality and ergonomics, Audi is light years behind.

I still think Audi have it about right in terms of cabin, my 123 and X3 were brought over the Audi equivalents because i felt their drive was far better and the interior not much worse. Also i knew when it broke i'd have to use Audi aftersasles which is around here frankly 3rd world and given its my money not company i'm not prepared to take that risk.

Having spent a year or 2 in BMWs and ive got used to the look, I dont find the interior so much of an issue, but i can see why people would suggest the Audi is better.

Well it looks like i may have sold the Prius, and not really found anything solid.......

Asked for a P/X against an Avant, but they wouldn't touch it as too specialist. So whacked it on gumtree as it's free, not expecting much. Had about 3 offers within 2 hours!! Had a visit at work yesterday and got haggled to death [first time i've sold a car, interesting banter!!]. Agreed on £5250 [had it up for £5950, my good man Booster reckoned it was worth £5750 private].

Fairly happy, although i got an offer of £5750 this morning - always going to happen. Just hope they understood that i'm making them walk into my branch of bank on Friday for them to hand over the £5k balance [only wanted to deal in cash, and their English was slightly limited].

So, panic mode to find a car this weekend. Hoping the Avant that wouldn't p/x is still available. Fingers crossed!!

Well, i knew from the start that the A6 would rule my heart over my head! Prius sold and cash in the bank last Friday.#

So up to Newcastle on the train on Saturday.

Came back with my new mota. A6 Avant, 2l diesel TdiE S Line version. Has upgraded full electric front seats, heated front and rear. Bose surround sound. Rear sensors and the iPod connection.

76k mileage wise, so a few marks here and there [inc a woeful attempt at touching up some chips front left], but pretty tidy overall.

Love it. Just a different league to the Prius. So comfy and solid feeling. Is a huge car, but you don't notice it as the cockpit engulfs you - helped by the black roof lining i think.

Fingers crossed nothing major goes wrong with her now. MPG is pretty bad, my commute was 55 in the Prius, sitting at 38 in the A6!!

[sorry for the rubbish pics!]

38 is what i'd personally expect for most 2.0 diesels, it's about right.

Having done over 70k already I very much doubt it's going to improve any further, short of changing driving style.

I am averaging 46.4 mpg after 5,500 miles and regularly get over 50 mpg on my long driving trips.

My current 'high' stands at 55.8 mpg from a 450 mile round trip.

My average would be closer to 50 mpg if I didn't have such a short, and stop-start, commute of 3 miles into the office each day.

Also worth remembering, most diesels (not just BMW) have come a long way in a pretty short time. The latest units with 7/8 speed autos and start/stop etc are getting anything up to 10mpg more than similar units 3 or 4 years ago.

Having said that, I'm averaging over 40mpg in my E92 330d with the previous gen 254bhp engine and 6 speed auto.

Hope so - is a 12 mile commute that involves heading round Bradford's ring road. Sometimes i fly through, but more often than not i hit a red at the silly amount of traffic lights we have round this way!!

Just the paranoia about DPF and DMF to live with now...........[any sign of clutch judder has me panacking!!]
