Moving from an Audi A4 to BMW 520D - one guy's experience

My radio doesn't have any numbers. I've had the car 4 years and I've only just realised that I turn it up, turn it down and have no idea where in the volume range I am.

How have I coped with just setting it where I want without being able to put a number on it?  :o  ;)

Do you count the number of tiny little clicks? :roflmao:

See I'm looking forward to getting back into a BMW with Climate as the Audi Climate is just plain dumb in comparison.

Solar sensor, erm nope, Fogging sensor, rem again nope. So I'm constantly having to adjust it when the BMW I could leave it alone.

As for the air vent wheel, I just left it at the hot and cold point and it then directs what ever temperate at me the car is trying to achieve then, easy peasy.

What I think I will miss is the trip in the Audi, I like to have a journey computer and overall without having to reset it, I hope the new one has the same feature but the old one didn't. I'd have to reset it for a journey if thats what I wanted.

The have added a line to the Trip Computer screen.

It says "Reset automatically".  Tick it and it does, then it continues to for all trips unless you untick it.  +++

I've always found VAG climate to be a pain in the arse, it does have solar sensors etc, it just doesn't seem to take them into account.

It's the only brand where you still have to turn the temp up or down on corresponding hot or cold days, everything else you just set 20c (or whatever you find comfortable) and that's it, it can be roasting hot, or a blizzard outside, but the car will still be 20c.

Thats good, I might use that sometimes but also like having another telling me what the overall averages are as well, that the Audi does well. One that auto-resets for each journey and the other that never auto resets meaning you get the best of both worlds.

Goes off to read the manual....

I've not even gone into sport or used Eco Pro whats its yet, this work thing is getting in the way!  :uhoh:

I never use Sport.  It damages what I get in Normal and Eco Pro mode.:roflmao:

Have you got a cradle and an iPhone?  If so, the Eco Pro app is very clever, as is BMW Connected.

Routes sent to the car, driving data downloaded, oh you could spend an eternity playing with all the toys.  BMW technology from an app and car integration/functionality perspective is light years ahead of Audi in my opinion.  Not even comparable when you look at the level of Twitter, Facebook, Google StreetMaps, Panaramio integraiton, email, texts, web radio and web radio apps - not forgetting the truly wonderful WikiTour that keeps me amused on long journeys.  They have completely mullered Audi in that respect and if you spend a lot of time in the car like I do, it is invaluable.

I mentioned it in another thread recently, you can even set the car to send clients (or the wife!) a text or email to show where you are and how long it'll be before you're home.  :roflmao:

Did I mention that you can also have the car show people like Mac what music track you're currently listening to?   That it sends it to Facebook?  He really likes that.  Loves it.  Oh and he's even more grateful when you get it to post the current temperature to Facebook, or where you are, or how long it'll be before you're at the destination (and it'll post a little map of that too).  Honestly, do that, he'll thank you  :roflmao:

If Mac likes it I best get on and set it up then, so Facebook you say.

I've no idea whats standard and extra on the Connected front I will find out later on. I've not got the internet search bit I know that much not sure if I can activate it now or not its only £95 why its not standard I don't know.

It seems the car change will be more of a driving adjustment that I thought.

Whilst I am inclined to potter about in the wife's civic when home/about town I have generally been a staunch Manual fan.

So getting used to the auto being at higher revs than I would have it is something just to get used to (ie nothing for me to do); sounds like nothing but I am/was a pretty efficient/smooth driver.

The other thing is it purrs beautifully on the motorway but I really can tell it is a diesel when stationary due to the slight vibration (more than I have been used to).

These have knock-on effects on my driving of course which also needs to adjust as I am pretty lead-footed - more so than this engne needs as MrMe pointed out to me so will have to learn the sweet spot for the car.

Hence currently the mpg is pretty rubbish in my hands so far and today I did play around and see that actually easing off ever so slightly made virtually no difference to the cruising speed but mpg shot up from 44 to 52mpg (I used to get 50+ mpg consistently in the A4 for the same journey).

I know its not a numbers game but only my such yardsticks can I get a measure of the car.

The other thing I simply cannot get it to do it start-stop at lights. Again easy to do in my sister's manual 1-series when I chuck it in neutral but I have tried everything in this - pressing the brake hard; putting it in neutral, putting it in park, putting hand-brake on: all to no avail.

Probably not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but if it is meant to do it I would rather find out asap if there is a problem preventing it.

It might not. There is of course the confusion that there is a start/stop button but there is no "A" with a circle around it which I think is for Auto-Start/Stop.

Didn't help that I took it to local dealer to ask and instead of coming out to have a look she just said "probably due to your driving style"

I think TS is right, there is the button which says:

START

STOP

which is the big button you hit to make it go and to kill it when you've arrived, but isn't an auto start/stop button. The A-in-a-circle button control auto start/stop, without that you don't have the function.

Or it could be your driving style :roflmao:
