That's bloody great news.

+++

Second that

Any opinons on Khan v Alvarez as to why he has taken this fight rather than getting knocked out by Brook?

I see this like Eubank taking on Carl the cat there is only one outcome, and I rate Eubank senior leagues higher than Khan in the talent and durability department

I can only assume therefore he sees it as a fight he cant lose as he has a ready made excuse when he does

Alvarez takes him out between rounds 7 & 8 thats where my money is going from the winnings from the Last Samurai in the National this weekend on at 33/1 each way if he stands up no way he finishes out of the places

Anyway, forget the heavyweight division.

Watch by far the most terrifying British boxer in a good while from last night when he took on the European Super-Middleweight champion....

He looks pretty good and can really bang with both hands, that first left shook the poor champ to the sole of his boots

I think he's a future World Champion and he's not bothered who he fights.  He has punching power way above his weight and the only thing nobody really knows is how skillful he is as a 'boxer' instead of a fighter.  As everyone knows, you reach a stage when you have to start boxing as you rise through the ranks.

He's 6' 3" tall and has KO'd or forced the retirement of 14 of his 19 opponents so far.

The next 3-4 fights will make him.

If he comes up against a high quality counter puncher who can genuinely defend themselves, it'll be interesting to see what'll happen.

I have a feeling he's the type of guy who'll hit the headlines overnight with a major win.   I've not seen anyone punch as hard as him at this weight for a long time.

p.s. he is now ranked at No.8 in the division by The Ring.

Here are the fighters above him.  You'll immediately see two names that he's on a collision course with!

1.  Abraham

2.  De Gale

3.  Jack

4.  Ramirez

5.  Dirrell (Andre)

6.  Groves

7.  Dirrell (Anthony)

Surprised that AA is number 1?

Groves isn't the same fighter after being pole axed by Froch and Calum Smith would beat him tomorrow

De Gale would be his biggest test as he would be the most elusive boxer out of that lot but does he have the power to trouble him? I think not

I'm not surprised he's no.1 purely because I don't think much of anyone else in that list.

Abraham isn't too good but he's not easy to beat for any of those other fighters.

De Gale can box and I wouldn't put Smith in the ring with him for quite some time yet.  He carries deceptively heavy hands these days too.  I'm not saying he could trouble Smith with a punch - but a boxer doesn't throw a single punch, he throws lots and lots of them...and they do get to most fighters eventually (Calzaghe is the perfect example of how punches will eventually sap everything out of an opponent without necessarily putting them down).

If anything, the list shows how devoid of real talent the division is without Ward (he now being a light heavyweight).

I would see Abraham as an ideal opponent for Calum Smith and he could do what his older brother failed to do and beat him

He's pretty static, totally  predictable and not exactly the best boxer out there, it must be the fight Eddie is aiming him for at some point?

Oh I'm sure it is one they'd like at some stage.  I just don't see it happening for quite some time.  I think Smith needs a good 5-6 more fights.

But correct me if I am wrong but wasn't Hearn Jr was talking about his next fight being for a world title?

I guess if you have just won the European then it sort of makes sense?

If not then who would you see him fighting next?

I honestly don't know who I think he'll fight next.

Hearn comes out with some bizarre claims at times too.

Groves is saying he wants to fight him now.  I find it very interesting that Nigel Benn has had his say too, saying he thinks Smith would 'destroy' Golovkin.  That's a very bold statement!

De Gale has also been speaking well of him.

I think he'll face one of the Dirells' next.  Then Badou Jack or Lucian Bute depending on who wins that fight.

I just don't like to see a fighter rushed and, whilst the win was impressive, I think he needs to be allowed to show what he's got against a few others.  Hearn is saying he thinks Smith will "dominate the division for years to come".  I don't disagree with that, but the years don't need to start in 2016.  I'd like to see him step up to the big names late in 2017.

When is Khan fighting Canello then? Sorry, not always up to date with these things.

I really admire Canello. Good jab and great body shots. I would hate to face him in the ring.

Overheard someone saying Khan has put on a load of weight and doesn't look in good shape? Is that right?

On the other hand, I highly respect his new trainer Virgil Hunter (Andre Wards) ......so would be interesting fight.

May 7th.

I haven't seen anything of Khan in his build-up to the fight so I don't know what shape he's in.

I'd be surprised if he was top notch though as that's one element that he's always seemed very disciplined in.

Canelo is ready, that's for sure...

I've never rated Canelo that highly, his amazing following makes him seem better than he is, if that makes sense.

He is still better than Kahn though and the added weight will not be in khan's favour. He will be in good shape but those added pounds (muscle) will slow him down. Speed is his biggest quality and I think he will be a little easier to hit now and when he is hit on that chin it will be good night.

Martin v AJ

Still big question marks over both at the highest level as neither has really been tested so we don't know how they will react to being pushed hard.

AJ is far too big and bulky to be a great 12 round fighter. Those muscles are going to suck the oxygen up and I strongly doubt he will be any threat from round 10 onwards. The question is, can anyone actually take him that far and find out.

Having said all that, AJ will take Martin out in 2 rounds. I really wasn't sure a couple of weeks ago but in the last couple of days Martin has seemed scared. At the weigh in he couldn't keep eye contact with AJ for more than 2 seconds. His body language appears to have changed dramatically in the last few days.

If he does that, he'll struggle to get a fight against anyone of note.

I have predicted a round 6 win by KO, but I still think it could go either way.

I don't think Martin is a top notch fighter but I'm mindful that he's still the sternest test Joshua will have faced and by a long way.

PPV of course. Every half decent fight is PPV these days.

I hadn't seen that fight before. Wow Canelo's opponent looked static, I think he would make anyone look good.

Hmmmm. Can't be bothered with PPV.

I saw that Canelo fight couple of years back. His opponent got absolutely pasted.....but he stayed on his feet and kept coming forward. Ref stopped it in the end. I was surprised that Canelo didn't put him down as was unloading some big looking shots.

Very swollen face at the end though!

Well AJ walked it again. Billy called it right. Round 2.

I hadn't realised just how improved AJ is now till I saw a programme on Sky yesterday and showed all his pro wins. I don't watch too much pro boxing.

I still remember him fighting the tall Cuban (Savon jr) at the London Olympics and he didn't look all that special then. Then again.... most Cuban AM boxers have incredible footwork and movement.

The judges robbed Savon and AJ still won though?!?!

As said above above by NNMM.. I think everyone will be giving him a wide berth now.....especially Fury.

I'm hoping Fury is dumb enough to think he can beat him.

If he gets through his rematch.

Fury could beat him, make no mistake about that.

Martin was terrible.  Absolutely shambolic.

I just hope Joshua doesn't get into a match with Haye too soon - because I still think Haye will KO him.

Hearn needs to take it steady with Joshua.  He's a huge talent but let's not forget that was just his 16th professional fight.  Dillian Whyte was a far better opponent than Martin.

It speaks volumes when you've been able to match a fight 3 times on YouTube within 10 minutes of it ending on PPV.  That isn't a contest and there wasn't a single second that was a test for Joshua.  It wasn't what he needed.

Something happened in the last week or so. Martin either had a crisis of confidence or a large sum of money was exchanged.

They say the eyes are the window to the soul and his eyes revealed the outcome long before the first bell rung.

I haven't seen anything of the fight so can't comment on that. Could Martin have continued or was he looking for an easy way out? That would be an insight into which of the two reasons I gave above.

He didn't want any more of it.

He waited and didn't get up until 10. Even the American fans can't believe how easy he went down and clearly didn't want to know.

Had he got up again, he'd have been straight back down.

Just watched it.

Martin took the face saving option. Now he can blame the count and pretend he was fine but just stood up a fraction too late.

Those shots weren't the best AJ has ever landed but when you have an opponent looking for a way out, they were good enough.

The box office farce rolls on.
