Audi RS3 Press Release

320D I get to use regularly sound like a bag of spanners against the 6 cylinder diesels I've used.

I've driven a 320d with the same engine as in my 520d.   We had one on loan for 2-3 weeks before the X6 arrived.

The problem is sound proofing - or the complete lack of it.  Drive a 520d and you don't hear even a fraction of it compared to the 3 series.

I'm not sure I'd agree. The V6 Audi Diesel I had for 12 months was a nice sound when on the move, and I'd say the same about the straight 6 diesel in mine. Its got a lovely sound to it, not in all cases it doesn't but it certainly adds to the experience of driving the car not taking away from it.

I dare say it's the same lump I had in a Skoda Superb and the Phaeton, can't really say it did much for me sound wise, a good engine no doubt, bags of torque, but it still sounded like a tractor from outside, inside it was better due to the soundproofing, but it was never a noise that made we want to use the full rev range just to hear it.

The 5 pot diesels we had in the Volvo and the Merc sounded different, but still unmistakeable diesel, and the 5 pot in the VW Transporters sounded like a bag of broken spanners, even if it was stupidly quick for a van full of seats.

Beat me to it!  +++

They've kept the base price down, but at the cost of spec.  So whereas the RS4 has a lot more kit over the S4, this doesn't seem to be the case on the RS3.  Not even Super Sports Seats or Nav as standard which is a bit mean!

But aren't all cars relatively more expensive?

I can't afford a new car just now, but if I could, I just think I wouldn't.  I'd rather buy a 1 or 2 year old whatever for the same £40k.  I get that some people want something that's not been driven by anyone else and no-one else has farted onthe seats or picked their nose and wiped it on the door handle, but that's never bothered me - nothing a proper valet can't sort out :P

I like both of these, but now cue the "yeah, but I don't want a 911" and "the 355 would cost too much to run" - followed by "the RS3 is so much more practical, and it'll beat both of those hands-down" tut that would have come along.  Until I wrote that :P

Or the 'I don't want a second hand car, so you can't compare them'.

Which is a fair point, personally I'm not averse to buying new, I've done so many times, but it doesn't really make much sense with my mileage, and what I use it for, so now that I have other priorities, I buy at 1 or 2 years old.

Yeah I know, but I just have a problem with the Golf R.  its almost £40 and its a Golf.  That's a £40k Golf and I cannot justify it in my mind as being worth £40k to me, ever, so I tend to be a little negative on the spec.  I cannot justify in my mind over £30k for a Golf, it doesn't have for me the feel of a car of that value.  I suspect I am stuck in a time bubble where I have distorted views on values and the golf fails that criteria.

I see what you mean - quick scan and found £189pm on a 2 year deal.

It's like a step back in time - Forums are littered with the 19 and 20 year old lads getting the Golf R for peanuts on cheap Lease deals - only the Insurance is equal to over six month's rental !!  :eclipse:
