Just bought a 600 track bike which of course is all very exciting.

The story is we did an open lane test day (great fun) a few weeks back where a small group of mates swapped bikes. My son swapped from his Aprilia RS250 on to a VFR400 and loved it. (He never wants to ride the 250 again in fact).... I swapped on to a nicely sorted version of my R1 (Ohlins suspension, better power and brakes etc..... every thing I would like to do to mine in fact. I also had a go on a yamaha R6. The R6 is such a different bike to the R1. 17,000 rpm, very light in comparison, but quick if you push hard etc...

It left me thinking where to go next. Improve/replace my R1 or try something like the R6 and work on riding better. At the same time what to do about my sons bike. So, this bike appeared for sale. Nicely sorted. All top race bits, Ohlins suspension etc but a standard engine. The plan is for me to ride it and get to know it and later for my son to have a go, see what its like and take it from there. There is also the option of converting to Superlite class where the engine is converted to 450cc by disabling one cylinder.... sounds odd but its a very successful race formula here with no mechanical issues.

So anyway, we are very excited by the new bike and the new way forward. We got a good deal (would cost at least twice the price to take a similar road bike to this spec)....

will post more pics when it arrives...

Cunning plan. Never heard of running one on 3! Is it something that you can switch on / off easily? I guess it's not just pulling a plug lead off?

I totally get small bikes on track. My CBR600 was a lot easier to ride, flick about and feel you was getting to grips with compared with my GSXR1000. Some of that is just time/familiarity but the lighter weight makes a massive difference. Before I got the thou I was really tempted to get a 750 as many seem to believe it's the ideal compromise and i can see why. I just couldn't resist seeing what litre sport bikes were all about.

You new bike looks properly sorted. I can see the new rubber. What tyres do you normally ride with on track? Is you kid restricted to road tyres/no warmers or can they do what they want?

Great looking bike. I'm sure you'll both have a lot of fun on it  +++

That looks fantastic mate  +++

I constantly look at CBR600's and R6's in the classified ads and think what fun it would be to build a full on track bike.  You'll have a ball on it and (other than the straights) probably be quicker than on the R1.  600's are the perfect track bike imho - plenty fast enough, really nibble with super quick turn in compared to the litre bikes and forgiving enough that you can be a bit ham fisted with the throttle on exit and get away with it.
