Tipex
Time well spent, it looks fantastic. I wish I wasn't so lazy, all our cars need a damn good clean and polish up.
eldavo69
The riddle of the missing rear view mirror has been solved by the prompt arrival of a replacement from German eBay complete with the mounting button (and a little chunk of windscreen still attached to it). 2 minutes with the angle grinder had a nice smooth surface and I picked up some windscreen adhesive from Halfords too. £5 from Halfords or £2 delivered from eBay but as Evans Halshaw were paying I went with the instant option! Dropped the receipts for the mirror and adhesive off at the garage this morning, they took copies and raised a cheque to be sent direct to me as well as furnishing me with a coffee to go. Very polite and friendly, left me with a good feeling about Evans Halshaw- even if the purchase negotiations were a bit protracted they've come good when it counts - sorting out little niggles. Followed the instructions on the kit and a couple of minutes later, success: Just checked now, a few hours later, it's not fallen off and I've moved it into the correct position so it must be stuck fast: And a gratuitous beading shot from after I rinsed the roof off :
eldavo69
Time well spent, it looks fantastic. I wish I wasn't so lazy, all our cars need a damn good clean and polish up. Ta! Although when it becomes MrsEldavo's daily driver we'll see how it fares then. Although I figure if I get it sorted properly to start with then keeping on top of it will be far easier. JonC
Great surface tension. Lovely beading
eldavo69
Yup- considering it's a sealant and not a wax it's still bloody good.
Tipex
Whatever happened to sheeting? (no not that) I seem to remember being told* some years ago that beading was bad (some bollox about dust getting trapped in the beads or the beads acting as magnifying lenses and letting the sun burn the paint) and that you wanted something that allowed the water to sheet off instead. *might have been one of those stupid yank infomercials selling snake oil (or polish in this case) that was probably flame proof too. NewNiceMrMe
Reminds me of cleaning the roof on my 6 series. I once applied far too much Autoglym hood cleaner and spent a entire hour trying to rinse it all off.
eldavo69
This little lot arrived: Parrot Asteroid Smart, Gen1 Boxster/Cayman Double Din surround and fitting kit, FAKRA aerial adaptor, inline fuse and a Matt finish anti-glare screen protector for the Nav unit. To replace the standard Porsche stereo with a 6-cd changer in the frunk: Side carpets and panels off and stereo unbolted and removed: Decided that I wanted to route one of the phone cables to the glovebox and the other to the rear armrest, that meant removing the centre console, starting with the gearknob: Just as well really as this revealed 10 years of grime: I believe the phrase the kids use is "that escalated quickly":

Tipex
What's with the superfluous 'E' on the Menue button of the standard Porsche unit? Is it meant to give a clinical (not a criticism) German car a bit of 'flair' like in Italian cars that still label dials in Italian such as Olio, Benzina etc? If so, it doesn't quite work. It's always quite satisfying cleaning the years of dirt out of bits of the car that can't be seen, you'll know it's done!
eldavo69
No idea. But it's gone now. Several test fits and adjustments of a mm here and there before bolting everything down into place: And all lined up nicely: So clipped the surround into place: And all is good. From a brief play it's a very well featured unit. Lots of apps that can be downloaded and played with but straight out of the box the Nav is very capable, the radio interface is very clear and has auto scanned all the stations and the iPhone link for music etc is excellent too. Played about via Spotify but you can download the Spotify app onto the unit and this then gives you all the playlists and control that way so I'll be doing that when I've finished putting it all back together: I paused it to take a photo of the music interface and it deleted all the song, artist, album info from the screen - left the cover art though:

Tipex
Can you get those ugly Android controls to disappear? Can't stand seeing them, they always bug me! Looks like a nice bit of kit, certainly brings the car bang up to date.
Rachel
A daylight shot of the finished kit would be good.
patently
What's with the superfluous 'E' on the Menue button of the standard Porsche unit? Looks like a nice bit of kit, certainly brings the car bang up to date. The buttons are always there but I like that. The only physical button on the unit is the power button so the menu buttons being omnipresent brings standardisation to all the different screens and apps. I know that MrsEldavo will find it more intuitive that way too.
eldavo69
A daylight shot of the finished kit would be good. I will do but currently the centre console is stripped down to be cleaned and reassembled with the phone wires in place, the glovebox and surrounds need to come out to route the other USB accessory wires into there, the gearknob and gaiter have been dropped off at the Furniture Clinic so they can produce a leather repair kit that's an exact colour match and I'm going away for the rest of the week down to our Head Office near Heathrow! The handbrake has some ring marks on it and the driver's seat has some bolster wear that I'll repair and recolour with the Furniture Clinic kit which should be ready for the end of the week. The roof has come up very well indeed now it's dried out but there are a couple of areas that will need another going over once I get the car back outside. eldavo69
I've also ordered a rear view camera - the wiring is not something I'm looking forward to. I'll take a power feed from the reversing lights, this will power the camera and also have to go back to the head unit as it has a signal wire to automatically switch to rear view camera mode. The issue is that there's an engine in the way and Porsche have gone to great lengths to insulate the cabin from the noise and smells of that sat behind you! M8CKN
Was with a customer today, he was showing me his wife's new Range Rover...what a car! He said her Boxster is in the garage at home and he's putting it up for sale. 2003....19k miles!! Said he's been offered £8k for it.
NewNiceMrMe
Was with a customer today, he was showing me his wife's new Range Rover...what a car! I hope he got what he ordered. We didn't. Shambolic experience. They are a work of art in the flesh and a monster of a vehicle, but the entire process has meant that MrsMe will be going down the Cayenne route that Patently has (in all likelihood but not the V6 Petrol). NewNiceMrMe
Eldavo - let me know what you think to the Parrot in the longer term. I would be interested in getting one fitted to the C70 but I've read very varied reviews on them. I'm not convinced we could get the housing/surround we'd need but the unit specs seem very good indeed for the price.
