Whats the point of the remote boot release?

Ok so I've been pondering this...

New Audi's have the third button that unlatches the boot, but it doesn't open, you still have to open it by hand.

The only time I could see a remote boot release being useful is if your hands are full of shopping bags, you've got your remote keyfob, so as you approach the car you hit the button, the boot opens and you dump your shopping straight in.

As it is you hit the button, then you have to put your hand on the boot and lift it open. So how is that any advantage to the old two button where you could hit the button to unlock the whole car, then you put your hand on the bootlid, click the release and open the boot?

Seems the only thing it allows you to do which the old system wouldn't is accidently drop your key in the boot whilst dumping your shopping, then slam the boot before you realise and get left with a still locked car with the key in the locked boot!

If they cantilevered the boot so the gas struts opened it when the remote boot release was pressed it'd be perfect, as it is it is just a gadget with no purpose as far as I can see... confused.gif

I rarely use it.. have done but when people want to get stuff out the boot .. I dont in that situation tho... I always use the latch.

They should make it work like the ones on the Mercedes' where it opens fully.

Another thing bout that boot... when its open, Im not the tallest but I've hit my head badly on the frame a few times...and God does it hurt!! smashfreakB.gif

I had it disabled at the dealer, along with the remote window opening.

I decided to get the window opening disabled after coming out one rainy morning & finding the seats soaked. I must have inadverently pressed the button while the keys were in my pocket the previous evening.

Luckily, leaving the car open all night isn't much of a security risk where I live!

I asked the dealer to disable the boot release for the same reason. It only took 2 minutes & I wasn't charged for it.

It's not just the remote boot release that you have to question the point of! What benefit is the soft touch boot release - particularly as getting the boot to close properly appears to require slamming it with exactly the right technique or it doesn't shut properly? The S3's already been back to the dealer once re this problem and although it's better I obviously haven't got the technique as I still can't get it to close properly first go. Seems to me you need wrists with the strength of Mr Universe. Or is it just our car?

without the button on the fob the thing would be much smaller and neater.

also why do skoda seat volkswagen and audi all have the same 'flick' keyfob. surely audis should be different. more upmarket. do they give you the same keyfob on tt's and s8's? what about the fobs on the RS models?

How do you reach for the keys if your hands are laden down with shopping bags ...............

Anyway, it's all abit irrelevant as the WO does the shopping in our house so it ain't a problem for me......

OK, you're at the checkout at Sainsburys, loadsa bags, you hold your key between your thumb and one finger, then hang as many bags as you can in a cirulation threatening manner on the other fingers. Then use free hand to pick up remaining bags. Then stagger toward waiting Audi, click "boot release" on key fob, boot swings smoothly open and you deposit all bags straight into boot.

Only you can't cos pressing the remote boot release only unlatches the boot, you still have to get your fingers under the lip above the number plate and swing it up yourself with hand full of heavy shopping, so you might as well have just pressed the "unlock" button, and when you put your hand under the lip press the release there and lift up boot.

Hence the question we came in on, why bother with the remote boot release if you have to go through virtually the same motions as if you didn't have it and unlocked the car/boot with the remote central locking...

Okay, just to play devil's advocate...

So, pretend I'm a female driving Ari's shiny new Cab (with the roof up 'cos it's cold outside).

I have the car locking configured for one-press unlock driver's door and two presses unlock all doors and boot.

I go to Sainsbury's or Harvey Nic's, spend a shed-load on some groceries/new shoes and then head back to the car which is in one of those mighty fine, dimly lit multi-stories that every town has.

What I want is to be able to open the boot without unlocking ALL the doors on the car, so that when I've put my shopping in, I can close the boot, unlock just the driver's door and hop in, without some oik hopping in the passenger door and attempting to hijack Ari's nice new motor.

The fact that the boot opens rather than just unlocks is probably a feature of the soft-touch release technology. That is, since they already open the boot electronically, having it open electronically with a button press on the remote fob is equally easy.

So there y'a have it - a good reason for having the remote boot open function!

Still would prefer it if I could order it without that functionality though and put the cost of it towards improved throttle response wink.gif

errr.... surley if some git wanted to hijack the car that badly he/she'd just take the keys?

True, but if the car park has monitored CCTV, it might be better for the offender to threaten the driver from inside the car anyway.

Maybe saving £100 on the remote boot release technology and using it to buy a Clifford BlackJax is the answer smile.gif
