Tomk
only leave it running so i can have a go but ive never heard of this before ?????why would you do that ?
sitas3
with turbo cars it is always best to let the thing cool down a little after a hard blast as they get (very!) hot. The S3/TT's have an afterrun coolant pump which keeps water circulating around the turbo water jacket for 10 mins anyway.
Simon_J
It always a good idea to let a car cool down after a hard run (turbo or non-turbo) by driving it normally for a while, or leaving the engine run for a while. Turbo's have a particular problem with being switched off while hot, in that they fry any oil in them, which turns to carbon and wears the bearings prematurely. With the cooling jacket fitted, it's probably not much of a problem, but there are other engine components that would benefit from cooling down. AudiPartner
I always thought you were supposed to leave the engine running to keep the turbo lubed as it stops spinning. By switching the engine off you're allowing the turbo to spin dry as there is no oil being pumped to it to lubricate it. Correct?
A3Floyd
I agree - i always give my S3 a little time to cool down before switching off if i've been 'making use of the turbo' !! Most of the time, just driving gingerly for the last 5 mins is good enough imo. If you dont get a chance to do this, let her idle for a few mins before switching off. Maybe i'm being too cautious cos turbo failures are VERY rare on these audis but i'd prefer to limit the chances as much as possible.
Bison1379134007
Reality is that unless someone has "played" with your ecu the k04 doesn't really work that hard on a stock s3, even when you wip it. Still it is always good practise to not wip your beast (easy tiger) and then just shut it down, especially if its been moded. Just as important to not fire up the turbo before you're engine is properly warmed. Till i got the Trevor i didn't realise how long it fricking takes for oil to get hot as those nice chaps at audi don't give you a gauge
Mollox
True, But then you do need it more in a Trev I'm surprised they didn't fit a fuse gauge that swings from E to F showing how many fuses are working
Bison1379134007
Don't start trev bashing - best cars money can buy. And besides you're off topic... someone moderate this fool Just to make it back on topic... You could always buy a turbo timer for it if you were really worried. Paul
good to see you around the site Bison. so what happened to The Trevs shower cap
Mollox
Just to tow the line and keep this on course: As a matter of habit (and even more so now the cold is approaching) I always stay below 2.5k for the first 5-10 mins of a journey and always ask little of the turbo until a few mins after the water temp has reached 90. I tend to coast the last mile or so home too and wil leave it running for a minute or two if i've been driving keenly The S3 does have some sort of oil pump tmer thing that pumps away even after you've switched off but its always good to be nice to your car. A standard S3's turbo can glow red even after a reasonably paced run Oh and Bison, you seem to have forgotten 5 stops on the hard shoulder of the M25 in the PISSING rain and the small matter of chasing down an AA van
Joni
I always leave my S3 runing after drive. In Turbotimer magazine they said, that 4 minutes is enough what so ever... And i got the same information from my local audi workshop... so i quess that would be correct.
grahamv2
There is a sticker on the door of my P1 that says if you've been driving hard let the engine idle for one minute before switching off. I assume it is to let oil circulate around the turbo.
Colin M
A couple of minutes should be enough so unless you hammer right up to your own front door or live on a motorway slip road, "normal" driving should suffice. Turbo timers are illegal in the UK* and I wouldn't like to try and insurance claim if your car was pinched whilst it was cooling down with you inside the house. The timer circuit will have to bypass the ignition and fuel pump immobiliser circuits so defeating the Thatcham 1/2 rating and possibly your insurance cover. Worth checking when you ring your insurers to let them know you have modded your car. * - actually the timers are not illegal but leaving your car with the engine running is. Himpe
Correct me if i'm wrong, but ScoTTy told me that the TT (and S3 fot that matter) keeps on pumping oil to the turbo even after it's shut down. If you get out of the car you can even hear it.
Paul
its not oil its coolant around the turbos jacket, but yes your right applies to S3 and 225 TT
scooby_simon
[ QUOTE ] its not oil its coolant around the turbos jacket, but yes your right applies to S3 and 225 TT [/ QUOTE ] It applies to all Turbo Cars. There is something in my scooby manual about allowing the car to idle for a few minutes after hard driving.
