Agree about the Corrado statements, that was my dream car at the time, ended up with a Honda Prelude VTEC, fun, but not a patch on the Corrado... [/ QUOTE ] aaaaaaaaaaa I went down south to test it. I was interested to buy it. but it had rust everywhere. the two doors needed a change. the boot ....no comments.... CraigR Posted March 5, 2004 Report Share Posted March 5, 2004 These were great cars, little rust on the boot that wouldn't go away, back wiper that only worked when it wanted too and those seat belt WTF !!!! they were the ones with no buckle on the belt. Clipped into a holder between the seats. Was probably the fastest Golf until the R32. & I disaagree with Clarkson & everybody else about the Mk 1 GTI. It didn't change the way small cars went at all. It was merely an extension of the Lotus Cortina concept. The Lotus Cortina is an iconic car. The Golf GTI/R 32/G 60 Ralleye aren't. The old Beetle probably is though. Where the GTI Mk 1 scores over the R32 is that 1 is a light-weight thriller & the other's an over-weight, under-powered tank. Why buy an R32 when an EVO/Scooby is way faster? He then had one of the last mk1 GTis and modded it heavily. It was pretty much Ferrari (80s not modern) quick. Great cars with no brakes and a bit flimsy for the year 2005. She's beautiful and I spend every moment I can either cleaning, tinkering, posing, driving or thinking about the joy of driving a 'real' car again. We all love the comfort of driving our modern cars but there's something to be said for the Mk1 Golf GTi. It took VW 30 years to come up to the same standard again with the Mk5. [/ QUOTE ] As a family that have owned Cortina GTs and Lotus Cortinas when new and still own one today. The Golf GTI mk1 scores over it and why it because an icon was reliability the injection system was less maintenance and total reliable, The Engine and mecanicals took no looking after. Unlike ALL other rivals in its day that mostly had carbs lumpy engines and sharp heavy clutches and were regular going wrong, Infact i STILL think its far more reliable than modern cars that have no end of problems especially electrical. (still own 1 mk1 GTI that can be left for years and still start with one turn of the key everytime). My mk1 GTI has been total reliable in 16 years (most of it been constant use) unlike the MK5 i currently have has been in 1 year. The VR/V6 engine in the Golfs is know to have quite a few weeknesses too. VW reliablity haydays were from 1983-1992 thats when they built cars to last and engineered them properly. The same period Audi built there reputation due to the more or less EARLY reliable 5pot units. You know, those discerning kings of the road in their baseball hats, well developed foreheads and protruding bottom lips. If you look properly at all the real quality cars in the world today, you will not find a single front wheel drive vehicle anywhere. That's a fact. Proper performance drivers' cars are rear drive or four-wheel drive. Front drive cars are for doing shopping and taking children to school etc. They are globally popular because they are cheaper to produce and that's that!
