AndrewEdward
Folks, got a new Mk V GTi, but which is faster as standard, the new GTi, the V6, or the R32? Had foot down yesterday but a Mk IV (either V6 or R32) quite easily accelerated away from me yesterday over a short distance. Yes, perhaps it was my driving, i doubt it though. Anyone have any thoughts? (i have a manual gearbox by the way)
DaddyDub
V6 4MOTION? If so it's 204ps (MK 5 GTI 200ps), I asume that although heavier (haldex unit and heavier engine) it has better traction off the line. The R, would have owned you! 240ps (250ps with 6463(?)) and again although heavier, would have made you his b*tch.
RedRobin
....Also, how do you know that the Mk4 wasn't chipped/remapped?
ChalkyWhite
I hadn't realised until last week that the MkIV V5 is so damn slow! 0-60 in 8.6 seconds apparently. Probably nice smooth/torquey power delivery though, I guess?
CRJ_1
I had an earlier V5, 150 bhp & thought it was 8.
AndrewEdward
Ah i see, so what 060 times do the R32 and V6 have then?
Simonl
You can't go on 0-60 times. Your Mark V is quick and should be able to beat a V6, but not an R32- that has 50hp and 4wd over you... and cost 5k more when new!!!

[/ QUOTE ] For all that, not really any quicker in performance stats that Ive seen. Also think the GTI is a better peformer in the real world, no need for ragging it to get any performance. Mid range is superior in every way Jonathan ex R32 owner

Woppum
My brother thought about getting the GTi. we both went to test drive it. I thought it was a fantastic car, silky power, deceptively fast and no torque steer. But he wasn’t impressed. He simply said, its nothing like yours, its like having the second best thing. Of course what he thought isnt true (you can spec a GTi up to £28k!) he doesn’t understand that the 2 cars paint a very different picture. The R is very quick, no going about it, im going to get slated for this but when I test drove the M3 cab the other day, not only did it not seem any faster that the R32, it didn't 'feel' as quick! The R slaps you in the face and tells you how fast you are going, it feels faster than it is. The Gti is les hardcore, but still rapid. Enough of my waffle enjoy, its a lovely motor and once the engine has loosened up im sure you will eat those lardy V6's for breakfast

Simonl
I don't care mate, i drive an audi, and are thinking of buying a GTI anyway. Although I have never seen stats like that . I personally have never seen a GTI clocked as quick as 6.0 seconds or an R32 as slow as 6.9. If i were in a GTI, i wouldn't want to go up against an R32, no way. [/ QUOTE ] Without digging out performance data I can't imagine a 200bhp GTI hitting 60 in 6 seconds either. With the weight and the power and torque available it doesn't really equate to that kind of figure. Chins
The numbers are in the UK test by Volkswagen Driver. 3dr Manual, out earlier this year. These guys do lots of their own tests whereas a number of mags just use factory numbers. Ive seen quite a couple of 6.5's for the GTI as well. Both the R32 and the GTI still dont feel very quick anyway IMHO. If I keep the GTI, it will be chipped. Jonathan

Been enjoying a 350Z, Fab VRS, another Scooby, ATR and a Clio 182 since the R32 Hope Ive not upset you round Amersham!!. Still working down in Chesham. [/ QUOTE ] Why would they be biased A VW mag that loves all Golfs. Having owned both I cant see why people think the R32 is a lot quicker. I can certainly overtaking easier in the GTI on a B road blast. Its not all about peak power.
Woppum
I thought the Gti was very good but totally different than the R32, and quite a bit slower. Chins I think you have to remember you had one of the first cars without the 64345664 update, which honestly made zillions of difference. My car has also been remapped and free flowing exhaust blah blah so it might not be fair to compare. But AmD did tell me their 270bhp Gti was similar to the R32 in a straight line, but not so hot round the corners. I think I would be inclined to agree (not because im biased) but the R stays alot flatter, the Gti had more of a cushti ride. They paint different pictures, it all depends what you want. Mook
[ QUOTE ] Its not all about peak power [/ QUOTE ] Absolutely. The Mk5 GTI has got a shed load of torque and the driving characteristics of a turbo'd car are a lot different to a non-turbo'd v6. Yes I'm biased towards the R32, but then I run a modified one, but who cares which is faster - they're both fantastic cars.

aswall
At the end of the day though, the GTI is a good looking modern Mk5 and the R32 is a dumpy lump of Mk4. Once the new one arrives then we can compare
Chins
My dream would be the looks of the MKV, 4wd, 280bhp Turbo V6 with the sound of the R32, oh and that R32 Blue
aswall
Yep I'd go along with that, but with rear drive rather than 4WD and 300bhp
