Completely planted to the road, ooodles of grip, and felt like they wouldn't fall apart if you drove off a cliff! ...bloody comfy too! My A4 cab I love for lots of reasons.... But if you think driving on a gorgeous evening to a country pub with a lovely V6 burbling away, and the wind rushing through your hair is boring, then it's not for you! Even the RS4 will be overshadowed by the new M3. I was always an Audi man until I 'went over' to BMW, now I just couldn't have one over a BM'. For me, every car Audi have is overshadowed by it's BMW equivalent. But that's why there are lots of different types of cars out there, something for everyone. [/ QUOTE ] IMO the only problem now is that I think people are used to generic design now and Chris Bangle cars are then perceived as 'too radicle', especially by previous BMW owners as they have been the ones to complain so much to ditch his designs. Z4 for me was a good looking car, 3 and 5 series though are just to commonplace and probably by popularity in executive fleets for justifiable reasons. I thought the three previous 5 Series (and 3 Series like Lodders car) were masterpieces of understated classy design. If I'd not got the A4 Cabrio I'd probably have had a 3 Series Coupe. I think cars the size of the 7 and A8 are too bloody big to play tail-happy sodding about with; they're far more suited to express cruising, which the A8 (apart from the rather weak 3 litre FWD ones) does superbly in almost all weather conditions. On the other hand, 4 years later I still love every single drive I have in it and can’t bring myself to think about changing it. Also, have people taken depreciation into account when working out just how "overpriced" audis are? Audis are currently enjoying some of the best residuals around...take this argument over 3 years vs a VW or Skoda and I'm sure its much much closer... I used to have a MKIV golf – essentially an A3 many will say – but that broke so often and in so many ways whereas the S3 (barring an expensive sensor & Haldex ECU) has been near faultless (it needed a new DV from day one and a headlight unit failed after 6 months – peanuts compared to the sustained abuse my wallet and patience took with the golf). Then again I have an interesting relationship with Audi in that, if I’m honest, its only the S and RS models that I actually like I can remember deciding on the Golf and not even entertaining the thought of the A3. In fact I positively disliked the A3 and plain didn’t want one. Then I saw the S3 and it all changed. Funny how these things happen but I have to say the subtle yet beefy styling of the recent S & RS models is right up my street and I still love the looks of my S3 today. I’m not blind to the areas in which perhaps S audis don’t quite shine but as a package the S3 covers so many bases so damn well, ranging all the way from comfort and goodies to rampant performance. I can’t think of many other cars that can do so much in one package. If I’d wanted to scare the poo out of myself and drive on the edge every single day I’d have bought an Elise or something dafter. Which would be great. But if its cold, wet, dark and pissing with rain and I’m tired and need to get from one side of the country in a short period of time then I know where I’d like to be sitting Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

[/ QUOTE ] I did - see my post above. A new VW Passat Sport vs Audi A4 Sport over 3 years (inclusive of everything) saw there being virtually no difference in the cost of ownership. Indeed a Mondeo/Vectra type car worked out more expensive. By opting out of a company scheme, over 3 years, it costs me less to buy and run an Audi A4 than it was costing me to take a company Mondeo Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

But I bought them both on their individual merits and on what suited me at that time in my life. In the end, market price is dictated by how much people are willing to pay. Whether or not anyone else thinks a car is value for money, the buyer obviously did or they wouldn't have bought it. If we all sat down and worked out the best value for money for our lifestyles, I bet a very small proportion of us would end up in the same car and a few of us would probably end up on public transport. When push comes to shove, buying any new car is a waste of money but the motives behind it are far more subtle than how much it cost to put together.
