NewNiceMrMe
[ QUOTE ] you seem so anti-Audi (nearly as bad as MrMe who is itching to get his A4 Avant ) [/ QUOTE ] ...yet I have never been anti-Audi and if you search TSN even recently you'll find lots of comments from me praising various Audi's. I have a very open mind when it comes to choosing cars and I won't stick to a brand just because I feel 'loyal' to it or any other such rubbish. I think the new 3-series looks awful. Yet I like the 1-series. I hate the new Audi grille, yet I think the B6 is a nice classy looking car. I hate the Jaguar X-Type (and owned one) yet I love the XJ. I think the Mercedes CLS and E class are lovely looking cars - but the C class is bloody awful. My references to Audiphilia in other places on TSN don't mean I am closed minded. If I was, why on earth would I pick an A4 when I could just as easily get an E46 Touring 3-series? I prefer the M3 to the S4, but would have an A8 over a 7-series. More importantly though, I don't think the gap between BMW and Audi has ever been narrower than it is today. Audi have put a lot of effort in and they're neck and neck in my opinion. Avus_Bub
[ QUOTE ] What I find funny is that so many people on this forum have obviously read this thread and just don't want to reply to it. Seems maybe that lots of people don't want to think there car is over priced over a VW / Seat or Skoda being as the boss of the company says is almost the same car. [/ QUOTE ] Wasn't going to reply but here goes......... Yes he's right. There you go. Of course he's right , Think about it - I could've got one of these...... NeilB
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I don't know why, but I find Audi's some of the most bland and boring cars out there today (I think nearly every German car is boring but thats another time and place) Theres just something that shouts 'beige' to me every time I see one. [/ QUOTE ] Why are they boring? (I'm genuinely interested) [/ QUOTE ] There just seems to be no passion about them, including the S4 etc... If I want a car, it has to have somethiung about it before I turn the key and drive it. And Audi's don't have that, they just have no presence on the road. It's the same dreary expession the front and the same bulbus arse on nearly every model. And the inside is just as bad, nothing about these cars grab me by the throat and shout "BUY ME BITCH!" It seems that to me, if you buy an Audi your saying to the world "I've had my fun, now I'm just waiting to goto the morgue" And no, I ain't no BMW or Merc fan either. Think thier just as boring at times too. (Waits for WWIII)

mrzed
[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Even so, Audis are looked down upon by Benz and BMW owners. [/ QUOTE ] no dont agree we have a bmw and audi in the family and there are things i like over the audi against the bmw and vice versa [/ QUOTE ] I was talking about the situation in Japan. Very often on forums and comparison sites there are derisive comments about Audis from BMW and Benz owners over here. Personaly I like the new Audi grill. In the case of my Sportback,it's its only redeeming styling feature. The new A4 is also pretty bland if you take off the SFG. They all seem to want "chaving up". Lowered with some nice big wheels and they start to have a little presence. But I think the same is true for most new BMWs and Mercs. And VWs look like German Toyotas to me

For me though, it's entirely the opposite. I love the clean uncluttered unadorned lines. Nothing there that doesn't need to be, no extra styling cues or creaselines. I love the details, the headlights for example on my A4 Cab are gorgeous. I love the way the car sits. I love the discreet high quality "I don't need to shout about it" air the car has. On the inside it just gets better! The beautiful brushed aluminium interior door release. The smooth damped high quality feel to the movement of every moving part from the indicator stalk to the glovebox lid. I love the solidity of it all. The quality and feel of the materials. The spot on fit and finish that only comes from an expensive and properly built car. and I love the attention to detail. Everything from the folding key which makes all other car leys feel clumsy through to the way the air conditioning moves quietly to "recirc" for 10 seconds when you squirt the screen to reduce the smell of screenwash into the cabin. No one builds cars like the Germans, and VAG group in particular. And if you appreciate superb quality and Bang and Olufsen levels of design then Audi is the marque of choice in my opinion. And they're so glad to be out. Lambo, Ferrari, Maserati, yep, very nice. But feck me, they ought to be, you'd get 5 Audi's for the money! Hardly a fair comparison. Same with the others, Aston, Rolls Royce, Bentley, whic of these do you own? Elise is a fabulous little car, but you couldn't actually own and use one as your only car. I understand where you're coming from, and to an extent I agree with you, I'd rather have an Aston Martin on the drive. But down here in the real world... Ari
Yeah no worries mate, just made me chuckle after the "yeah well, I prefer a Bentley myself" posts. Thing is, as I say, I understand where you're coming from, but you won't "get" German cars till you've had one. It's about the invisible rather than the visible. I had a Golf GTI MkII once, was about £12K back then. Replaced with a £22K Honda Prelue VTEC. And the Honda had the sytle, the noise, the performance, the occasion. But it really wasn't a patch on the Golf, just didn't have the depth of quality, the feel, the solidity. Went from that to Audi's and (despite consideing other things) had nothing else since. Trust me, once you've experienced a German car (and I mean properly, like had one, not just driven one) you'll know.
jimdiesel
Spot on Ari. Neil, When it comes to spending your own hard earned cash on a car, lots of different factors become important. In 1999 I bought an Alfa 166 3.0 Lusso. The car was fantastic and a joy to drive. After 12 months I swapped it for an A6 2.5 TDi after tiering of the dealers and lots of little niggles. I enjoyed driving the Alfa, but guess which car I enjoyed owning more. P.S. 106 is a cracking car.
