Steering grinding when stationary!!

Funny, I've just done 6,000 miles and thought I heard some sounds, though not "creaky". Trouble is that, unless the sound is blindingly obvious, it's now self-suggestive because we are all so aware of the possibility.

Jay, who are you going to be introducing me to who would merit a haircut? What's her name? - I wouldn't cut it to a short style for anyone in fact, there are reasons which aren't relevant or likely to be understood here. Next week is looking good 169144-ok.gif

I have it from good sources that Trinny does a bit of hair cutting on the side but I guess you're not interested. laugh.gif

I've been watching this thread for a while, with interest. I had a GTI delivered in July, and the 'creaking' noise started happening by the end of August. I would normally do as much research as I can on forums to find out what was causing it etc, but this once didn't do it. I now wish I had.

After several visits back to the dealer, with various things being tightened up and/or replaced they decided that it needed a new steering rack. This took nearly 2 months to arrive, during which time the car was pulling to left significantly due to the work done by the dealer before.

It was impossible to get an expected delivery date from the dealer and VW customer services - and each person I spoke to could not give any information or confirm that this is a problem affecting other cars not just mine (by this point, I'd found this thread)

My steering rack was replaced and the noise went away, but the grinding noise has now come back again. As before, it's worse when cold, but I'm fully expecting it to happen consistently every time I turn left.

Also, the car no longer feels quite right - as if the settings or the alignment of the new rack are slightly wrong. New noises had also started (creaking when rolling forward or back on full lock, either left or right, but these seem to have gone again).

I'm about to phone VW again and inform them that the solicitors have recommended that I reject the car, as they are selling what seem to be defective cars that they are unable to provide a fix for. Of course, it's not likely to get me anywhere, but may focus their minds on the job in hand.

I've also noticed that Car magazine's long term GTI has developed this fault this month.

Anyway, does anyone know what settings can be changed through software/hardware on the steering rack? When fitting the rack, do they need to select a particular model or do they have a range of values to select from?

Also, when you've got the car on full lock, does the steering wheel rest in the same position for the left as the right? By that I mean, if you turn the wheel so it is on full lock to the left, does the GTI badge end up at the same angle as if you turn it to the right on full lock (opposite axis of course). Mine doesn't... the GTI badge goes all the way to the top in one direction, but not in the other.

whatever to cause of the issue, it sounds like yours was replaced incorrectly.

I think all the cars do it , and it's probably something related to either bushes or the loading on the electric motor on the steering rack. I don't think it's a safety issue, just an annoyance, which you are right to say is not acceptable on a new car. All the VW group that use this platform have the same issues, A3 etc, so I'm sure they are working a fix pdq. Replacing the rack obviously doesn't fix the problem, But it looks like most of your issues come from poor service at the dealers on the replacement rack.

Front suspension and steering will be the same as the gti and any other Mk5 golf/a3 etc

Steering rack is the same on all golfs and a3's, and if you check the audi forums they have the same noises. I suspect the wider tyres may make the noise worse but it's there even on the lower spec models. Mines almost not noticeable currently , so have just logged it with the dealers, doesn't stop me enjoying the car.

A big amount of sympathy goes out to you GTI Matt. The solicitor is definately the right way to go. Its interesting to hear that Car magazine have seen this fault. I wonder whether they are aware of this topic in this forum.......I think someone needs to get an address for them and let them know about this. The power of the media is not to be under estimated.

I'll be getting in touch with Car magazine, and sending the copy to VW. Basically, I love the car but this is an on-going problem that no one seems willing to give any information about (or indeed, able to fix). A solictors letter (or a copy of the letter to Car Magazine) may well focus the minds of those involved and that can only be a good thing.

Going back to the original post though, what were peoples' thoughts on the lock-to-lock issue? I guess I need to go to the dealer and persuade them to let me take another GTI out for test drive...

I check this on mine, and it's the same both sides, almost to the wheel being exactly upside down. I think although u can only install the rack in one place, they didn't centre it before connecting to the steering wheel, and have adjusted the track rod ends unevenly.

Matt - when you have confirmed this, please can you give an overview of what it is likely to involve?? In other words, will the dealer that has worked on my car previously have to go back on what they have already done to remedy the fault with the new fix?

Snoopy - I'll probably send them a link directly to this thread. I have already taken copies of it to the dealer, and had meant to send it to VW too.
