jimmyp
This is my baby in bits, and she really is a bag of bolts now. The only bit left in the engine bay is the block.
jimmyp
Check this one out, i told you there is nothing left in the bay, even the bumper is off and you can just see the left wheel thus quite obviously there is absolutely nothing left of the engine!! Oatz
Sorry please ignore that previous post, have found it now (doh) Jimmy, is it just the flywheel they are changing or is it a new block, the reason I ask is i checked mine and discovered the following After a 15 min drive this morning i parked up and could hear a very light squeal/hamster wheel type noise (have always heard this since buying the car but presumed it was an alternator belt) when i pressed the clutch in the noise changed to a lower/quieter pitch Finished work this evening and started her up, hamster/high pitch was there, as per usual (by the way can only hear this with window down and listening quite hard). I pressed the clutch in and the noise became louder. Arrived home after 15 min drive and revved the engine to around 1500 - 2000 rpms and i could hear a distinct rattle sound. I only did this once and have never noticed this noise with the window up, what do you think, does this sound familiar and if so am i potentially looking at a new engine? (i've only owned the car for 3 weeks..) Dont really fancy the hassle of a new engine, would be nice I suppose to have a fresh'un but would it make a diffence to value/selling in the future? PS mine was reg in april 03 and has done 22k

Oatz
and just to add i drove to work this morning i cannot hear the (1500 -2000rpm) noise when driving even with the windows open. i am only able to hear it when I am in an extremley enclosed space (ie my garage) The idle hamster wheel noise is audible with the windows open and is present all the time
Soulboy
[ QUOTE ] anyone? please? I'm currently crapping my pants about this [/ QUOTE ] I shouldnt worry too much about it. Its still under warranty isnt it? - just take it in. Oh. and if you do start listening for strange noises, you will always hear them. Dont panic

boxerdogted
I think that i would rather buy one with a new engine than one that has the original engine and a posible fault. I dont think that it will make any difference to the value of the car, does anybody know the full warranty history of there car with regards to what has been repaired or replaced ?. Calm Chris
Full service history? Well you can phone up a Merc or BMW dealer and they will tell yo FSH. But warranty is a side issue. Where's the Mulk, he either knows or can find out. I'd go with you, ghosting warranty work is cool, no negative PR. Good for Vw and (maybe) not so for the 2nd owner
Mook
I have done this with every VW and Audi I've bought. Get hold of the service book and make a list of the dealers who have serviced it. Ring the service dept at each dealer and ask them what work has been done on the car in addition to the servicing. I've never had a problem with the service team at any VW garage giving this information, as long as you talk to them nicely! This doesn't necessarily mean you will catch everything, because it's possible a previous owner has gone to another dealer who has not done the servicing for warranty work, but at least it gives you an idea. If you're in any doubt, just walk away - there will be another .:R32 along soon... HTH
