smeaton
Hi all, I have a 2000 vw golf 1.8t (70k), everytime i start the engine from cold there is a loud screech, when the car was in for the last service they told me it will cost about €100 to fix it, think its the starter motor or something. Does anyone know of a quick and easy and of course cheaper way of stopping it? Really appreciate any help. Thanks Nick.
Mook
This is normally caused by the fact that the solenoid (which pushes the starter motor gear onto the flywheel) is not returning properly. Long gone are the days when you could swap solenoids - VW only supply the starter motor as a complete unit. You may be able to get a reconditioned unit. Try www.gsfcarparts.com or www.eurocarparts.com It will set you back about £60 or so, plus a surcharge, which you'll get back when you return your original unit. It's about 30 minutes to swap one out on a 1.8T. HTH
mike_true80
What do you mean by loud screech? Slipping fan belt style or something else? My 2.0 makes an odd noise when started, kind of like a laboured whirr which I suspect is something to do with the starter motor too (as it only lasts a second or two) - possibly shot bearings? But it's definitely not a screech. Any ideas? I'm guessing a starter motor swap on a 2.0 would require similar cost /effort?
pritesh
it does kind of sound more like a belt is slipping....

R32North
Have you checked to see if the belt is worn, cracked or slack?
peteA3TDI
sounds like the starter motor needs the clutch dust cleaning out of it and a drop of wd40
Skidmark
Is it possible to work out which end of the engine the noise is comming from ? If a friend helps [head under the bonnet / starts the car] with you in the other posn ? Then you will know if it's clutch/starter area or water pump/alternator/belts area .. cheers

[/ QUOTE ] If it the starter motor, remove and clean the shaft and lube with a thin oil like 3in1, Like the other chap said (think it was petetdi) The starter will give a noise for a second or so after startup. A belt would last a little longer and be worse in wet/damp coniditions
Hudster
my 1.8T does something similar but I only hear it when the windows are open and engine is cold, will have a look today Nick did you get yours fixed?
smeaton
No i have not got mine fixed yet but need to do something asap. I can hear the screech even when the windows are closed. Let me know when you have done something with yours and i shall do the same.
Simonl
Mine did this (2000 Y 1.8T) it was very loud, although i thought that spraying 3 in 1 might make the slipping worse!
harminder
Mine does exactly the same (2000 Golf 1.8T) and to be fair it looks like a common fault.. Took it to the dealers and they said that it is the starter motor!! Could the starter motor get damaged further if you carry on without fixing it - any impact on other areas? Mine only does it occasionally on cold starts and so I am not going to fix it until it gets constant..
collease
mine is the same again 2000 1.8T and only on occasions when its very cold. Im going to ask my mate about it as he used to work for VW he might have an idea of what we could do.
jon69
Mine screeches on startup when cold too, i know its not a belt screech but more of a mechanical one! its wierd how it only does it occasionaly, i tried grease and wd40 but it always returns which suggests its internal on the starter motor me thinks
Choc1
Yep, sounds about right. My 2001 1.8T does the exact same, f*ck it, if it's not totally broke don't fix it! (The missus screams louder than the starter motor when she has a local Saxo boy at the lights trying to prove a point against her, drive it like yer fella pays the fuel bill darling!!) mainy
If its a belt screech then try putting some talcum powder on the inside of the belt, a mechanic told me this a few years ago and I laughed at him. I tried it later on and it solved the problem shows you how much I know about mechanicals
bodger00
[ QUOTE ] talcum powder on the inside of the belt [/ QUOTE ] Can you imagine what Mrs Jones the nosey neighbour would say when you are shaking talk into your engine compartment...lol Not that I would care mind. Stu_UK
Sounds like it's a sticky gear train in the starter motor. Seems to be a common fault. Follow the link below for a step-by-step fix..... http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2269482 Hope it helps!
