Sponge
Have there been any independant tests on which diesel fuel is 'the best'? Most of the time I use Shell, only because I have a station less than half a mile from my house. The only other stations near me are Texaco, an Asda and a Tesco, the latter being further away. There used to be a BP garage, but I think that may have closed.
NeilB
I use Shell Extra. Used BP Ultimate over the summer, but got fed up of the extra £5 per fill-up for just a few extra mpg.
Sponge
The difficulty as I see it, is actually being able to assess any difference between the fuels. I may be able detect a difference in performance, at a push. But as for mpg - this varies dramatically anyway, using the same fuel. So I wouldn't be able to use it as a benchmark. For example, how would one know a 5 mpg difference was down to a different fuel choice, or simply because one drove more conservatively this month than one did the last? So in the end, it may just boil down price and which garage happens to be the closest when the tank needs filling.
drpellypo
Support your local garage - that's what I say. Yet another filling station up here has had to close - all because people want to save 1 or 2p a litre. Unless of course, you reaaaally want your car to get the best possible fuel. s4_sat
i just use uls fuel cos it makes mine run smoother.
mccombie_5
I just go to the nearest garage. Mostly Shell at Annitsford for me. Or I also pass a BP at Cowgate/Kenton Bar occasionally.
UBM
Don't use the supermarket fuels - other than that there is little difference. One tank of either ultimate diesel or shell diesel every 2-3 tanks will your your engine nice and clean!
Sparticus
Shell or BP Ultimate Diesel. Definitely noisier, slower and worse mpg using supermarket fuels
Bristol_S60
I've used BP ultimate diesel and can't really detect any better mpg or performance. Seems to be as good as shell, but a lot more expensive. Car runs quite course on supermarket fuels though, so always try to use Shell, as the BP stuff is very expensive. [/ QUOTE ] I find the same as you re: BP Ultimate, the only thing I could detect was a slightly quieter idle. But, I don't find the car runs worse on supermarket fuel, then again I haven't used a supermarket to fill up for the best part of a year!
aal234
nto that impressed with bp ultimate. Notice they advertise it as upto 27 extra miles per tank. If thats in lab conditions then I doubt you will notice the difference. My 306 tdi runs the same with bp ultimate or standard esso stuff.
chronyx
Shell diesel for me, it seems to like it. Don't use supermarket stuff though.
Snail
Might just be me, but BP Ultimate gave a slight increase in economy, made the car quieter, and slightly better acceleration. Shell was nearly as good Normal fuel really does show itself compared to performance diesel, i know my car is old, high mileage, underpowered, etc. Unfortunately i dont think ultimate is worth the 8p a litre premium, especially when it adds another 12 miles to my journey to fill up. I do use shell, as its just round the corner, and better than standard fuel. I even converted my parents to only using shell.
Aardvark
I'm new to the old diesel scene and this is the first real diesel I've had. So what is the big no no about buying supermarket diesel? I dont want to use it if its that bad. Cheers Tony
Durrsaku
Shell for me too. Avoid supermarket imo.

tappers
I stick to Shell as much as I can. Reason : in my previous car (Mondeo 1.8TD I occasionally put BP Diesel in and it made it run terribly, never understood it but tried it several times and was the same every time so stopped using it. [/ QUOTE ] Its not going to blow your engine or anything, its just supermarkets will get the fuel from the cheapest source. So somedays you'll have brand name diesel in there, others you'll have budget diesel. I dont know what the actual difference is, but i can certainly tell when i put a tank of supermarket diesel in mine.
Durrsaku
Besides my local Shell it is selling it at the same price as the supermarket.
