Ari, just had my rear tyres replaced, so my figures need updating I guess.

Mileage is now 20,179

Fronts replaced at 12,500 miles, and currently have just 3mm left - thinks I'll get another 1k out of them. crazy.gif.

Rears - first time they've been replaced. The guys said that the tyres should only last 8k on the fronts as the car puts a lot of torque through them.

Audi A4 Saloon, 1.9 TDI (130), 15 months old (oct 2004), 21,179 miles, 1 front set replaced. Original rears.

Tyres: Pirelli Rossos

Fronts: ~ 12,500 miles (estimated to replace for 2nd time at 21,500)

Rears : ~ 20,179 miles

Driving Style: Like I stole it

Tyre condition classed as "Irregular Wear" Mid: 3mm, Out: 2mm blush.gif

The fecker has put a 3" score mark across rear alloys. mad.gif

  • 3 months later...

Hi all been looking at tyresmoke for the past few months, cracking web site. I have an A4 Quattro Sport GMBH 1.9 Sooty. Had new tyres on the car 12 months ago and now done 21k miles (Dunlop SP9090). The rear tyres have worn lots quicker than the fronts and I don’t carry anything in the boot and the tyre pressures are looked at every now and again. Is this normal and what could it be?

Are you taking corners quickly?

My rears were wearing quicker than I expected. The tyre people said that I must take corners fast and that it puts extra wear into them for that.

I've just replaced my fronts now, at 25k, so my choice in tyres are lasting about 12.5k miles on the fronts and about 20k on the rears. For spirited driving with great tyres, I'm happy with that.

On my Golf I had Good Year Eagles and got nearly 30000 out of them.... back to my Audi however

2004 A4 1.8T (190ps) Quattro (18" rims) Pirelli Tyres just coming up to 20000miles I'll maybe get another 2k out of them. (First set BTW)

I take the corners as quick as the car/tyres will take me, but surely the fronts should be battered by now they are fine. Is the Quattro so aggressive that the backs will were more than the front?

Only on the new quattro system and they are reserved for the RS4 and all forthcoming models.

Current quattro will still wear the fronts quicker than the rears, example on the S4 I changed all 4 at the same time but where the fronts were down to the blocks the rears still had 3mm and that was with having rotated them a couple of time front to rear to even out wear rate.

I've got Michelin PS2's on mine (18 inch wheels). I've done 12100 miles on them so far and I've guess I've got another 4000-5000 miles to go before I change them smile.gif

However, £175 each for a tyre!! (even at my discount! blush.gif )

Shocking price!! Shop around and you will get them cheaper, much cheaper! I got them down to £135 per corner

Fwd vs quattro Sparky. ices_blah.gif

Whilst the A4 quattro models costing £1425 iirc more to buy new, quattro genuinely is one option that retains some value - if not all - second hand. Feedback from the forum indicates this is especially true with the sought-after quattro B6 PD 130 Sports. The economy might take a 3mpg hit - although when you are getting 50 to start with, is this seriously an issue?

With the bloody ridiculous cost of tyres nowdays, having permanent four wheel drive really does decrease tyre bills: This is simply as it decreases what kills tyres - slip.

Personally wouldn't buy an Audi without it nowdays.

My current priorities and a house to develop alongside the one I live in and more thought to retirement. An S4 would be nice, but it isn't going to put money in my pocket and help me jack in the day job before I'm 30 so I can do my own thing.

All in good time. All in good time.
