Dave_rave
Hi there, nice question here for a Friday afternoon…. I'm looking to buy a laptop as a desktop replacement. I've got around £700. I mostly surf the internet, use spreadsheets and like playing MS Flight simulator. I've found a laptop in Comet, it's a HP 2355EA. Costs £679.99, the spec is AMD 64bit 1.6Ghz processor, 1 GB 333mhz RAM, 60Gb HD, 128Mb ATI graphics card (shared mem) and 15" screen. On the plus side, it's 3Kg in weight, so semi-mobile too as I'd like to set up wireless in the house and surf in bed. I can't find any reviews for it on Google, but do you think this would fit my requirements or can you suggest a better one? The link to Comets for this Laptop is http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/572_296430.html I know there are hundred of Laptops out there, but I'm looking for build quality, reliability, performance all for £700 and this seems the best so far that I've found. Many Thanks for your help guys! I've added a picture and a spec above David
CarMad
Have a look at this New Gateway laptop Its the current A list laptop in the PC Pro magazine. Gateway are still very big in the US and are starting to come back to Europe again. Its well worth a look and its got a great spec, better than the option above and its cheaper. Dave_rave
Thanks for the tip, but looking at the reviews 2 things strike me. (1) what will the 3d graphics support be like for the Flight Simulator and (2) it looks like you can't buy it anywhere! The reviews on the PCPRO website state that 1 bloke tried 7 Staples stores to buy it and none of them said they had any and stated that they would not be getting more stock in either! I actually looked at the Gateway as i bought the magazine that this review was in, but trying to find the laptop for sale anywhere moved me onto the HP. So, back to the drawing board. Thanks CARMAD

(it wasn't a standard one i changed some bits)

Thorburn
Dave, where do you work, I get a 7% discount through my work too. Try the Dell Outlet store, I almost bought a VERY nice spec Latitude (Pentium-M 2GHz, 1680x1050 15.4" widescreen screen, 80GB HDD, ATI X600 128MB non-shared graphics, etc) for £750 the other day but holding out for Core Duo based machines. Gren
Dell laptops are notorious for their keyboards - mousepad goes bad and the pointer starts wandering. I've had 5 keyboards on 2 laptops. Desktops are fine though. Good solid kit.
Durrsaku
Have had Tosh and Dell and the last one for two years and no problems at all so far. Use it daily in office and home.

[/ QUOTE ] My Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop is 5 years old or so and has had some heavy use, was my main PC for over a year and got frequently used and abused at college and uni. Keyboard is still perfect and the trackpad has been brilliant after it bedded in.
Mollox
Here's another vote for wandering Dell mousepads This desktop is 6 years old and still going strong mind (well, minus the original IBM deathstar drive of doom)
Dave_rave
Thorburn, i work for Ford Motor Company. Has it's perks, but it's not been fun here in the UK whilst the US are bleading money like you wouldnt believe! We use Dell's here at work too. After doing a bit of searching i've found a brand new HP 2355ea as above on Ebay. See how that goes i think, i may be able to save a few hundred quid fingers crossed! Thanks for the tips guys.
