shark_90
Oh trust me, it's crappy. I have an £1800 bill to prove just how crappy it is.

shark_90
Oil turned sludgy. Sludge blocked oil strainer. Blockage caused problems with oil distibution. Hydraulic cam chain variator starved of oil. Rattle starts. Engine taken to pieces. Lots of things replaced. Big bill recieved.

craigmat
Hi chaps, interesting stuff, found this which is the official Audi service cambelt change guide. It's an excel file which you'll need to open up. Do we reckon this or five years whichever is sooner?
Lynas
v8 4.2L 5V... NO CHANGE INTERVAL?? Is that real? Or SAFE?
Daz
Yes that would be right. The V8 4.2 uses a chain not a belt, hence no need to replace.
Lynas
Someone was on here saying they where getting it done?!?!
shark_90
I believe some of the older V8's had belt drive, but I'm not sure. Certainly not in the S4 though.
quattroman
That excel file seems to be inconsistant. e.g. 1.8T 110Kw TT - no change interval, yet every other 1.8T engine does (although there's a fair bit of variance). Also my old A4 2.6 V6 said 90K in the owners manual, the spreadsheet says no interval. Peter
SDN Motors
That's bad news. Sorry to hear what's happened. It's such a great car too. We recently rebuilt a Renault Scenic after the cambelt snapped. Thankfully only the valves were bent - it snapped on engine start-up and it all stopped quickly so damage to other components was minimal. If it snaps on the motorway, expect the worst. To repair the damage our labour cost is usually around £400 - £700 depending on what needs doing, plus the cost of parts which is unknown until we're inside the engine. Oh, and VAT. We quoted a replacement cambelt for an A4 at £249 + VAT recently (including fitting), which you'll definitely need so I doubt you'd get much change from £1000+VAT including the new parts to fix it. Hope you get it sorted out ok. Edited March 21, 2011 by SDN Motors
PinkPrincess
Sorry to hear that this has happened. I always change the cambelt/timing chain a good 5k before recommended as the cost of it snapping and reapiring it is far more. You will be looking at anything in region of £400-700 and then any additional damages on top. When was thecar last in the garage because they should have let you know for any signs of wear! My mates Tigra is every 40k - good job she doesnt do a lot of miles!
