The police were following you for how long before you noticed them?

The thing is doing these speeds, you may driving quite 'safely' but its the other people on the road who aren't expecting someone to come on top of them doing 70mph more than they are thats the problem. znaika.gif

I was caught for a similar speed some years back - because the road was winding the solicitor thought my car may or may not have been on the video all the time and rather than demand the video he had me plead guilty to the "specimen charge" of speeding but we did not agree with the speed quoted.

With a lot of mitigation I got 6 points & 400ish fine - wait for the summons then call the court and ask for the name of solicitors who handle motoring offences then call all of them - you will soon know when you have one who knows what he is taking about (eg mine asked the names of the PCs involved).

Good luck !

PS The PC himself said he could see I was no danger, in control etc. so there was never any suggestion of anything more serious than speeding (although this is of course up to the CPS how they write it up makes a differenc)

Caught speeding doing an average of 118mph over a 5-mile stretch. Topped out at 138 mph apparently.

Did you not notice the headlights keeping-up with you in the mirror? tongue.gif

Clean licence will help, but that has got to be a ban, surely?

I know a chap who was caught and charged with dangerous driving for speeds in excess of 100mph on the M1 late at night with no traffic around - 12 months ban - retake extended driving test and 12 months probation.

JUst want to make sure you knwo how bad it can get.

If it's any help, a friend of a friend was clocked doing 114mph on the A14 (top). He received a 28 day ban and a 300 pound fine.

Good luck. 169144-ok.gif

I got done for 109mph on the A1(M) in 2000 - lunchtime, clear weather, minimal other traffic, first offence, grovelling apology etc etc

Still got a £500 fine and 50 day ban - according to my Dad, who is a JP, the maximum possible ban for that speed was 56 days, so he felt I was harshly dealt with.

I think you'll be looking at a 3 month ban at the very least........

I have been done for exactly this speed (118) although I was only doing 117.8!!

My work all ran a sweep stake and the suggestions were as wild ranging as seen in this thread. Nobody won as no one got clear what I got.

I was first in to court that day, on best manners, suit, shirt, tie, lots of apologies etc etc and I walked out with a £250 and 25 days. I felt very lucky. The pain came in two other places.

[1] It took about 6 months to get to court which was worse than the actual ruling.

[2] It stays on your licence for 5 years and you have to declare it to your insurer and everytime you get a quote.

Good luck.

p.s. I'm interested in the road, conditions etc. Mine was about 7:30am on a Saturday morning on a largely deserted M11 with clear blue skies and dry roads.

The offence happened on the M6 toll road on a sunday afternoon. Good weather conditioins, dry road and minimal traffic.

The car, a unmarked skoda did not put his lights on until he had caught me up and was right behind me after I had slowed down. Didn't notice him behind me as I was too concerned about what was coming towards me from the front.

The officer thought at first I was racing a range rover who was trying to keep up with me but I was not. His comment on this was they pulled me as I was the first one past them.

So basically, sit tight, wait for the NIP and just grovell by the sound sof it.

Thank you all, feel as sick as a dog.

The NIP is usually handed to you by the police officer at the time, and the court summons follows in due course, I think they have 6 months to issue a summons IIRC.

It is a very tempting bit of 'runway'.

I've used it a few times, anyone doing 90 mph (like me at 5 am) gets overtaken by at least a dozen cars over the road distance.

A prime UK road for cameras in and out of the tolls, like the French do. At least the French have run off / parking before you go out of a toll so you can have a chat and cool the car off for 15/20 minutes. just the right time to drop the speed average back down to inside the speed limit / distance times.

what happens if they cant issued the summons??

Or is it just posted out and assumed to have been received?

Just wondering as i am sure my grandad (used to repo cars until recently) managed to get away with jsut over the ton by not managing to be served with some papers - he basically was 'out of the country' rather a lot.

At least i think that was what he said - it was a few years back now.

I would think it's extremely rare for a custodial sentence to be given for a single speeding offence.

Once the speed rises above around 130mph, chances are a Dangerous Driving charge would be applied, which may incur a custodial, but I would imagine only then in the event of an accident/causing injury etc.

I guess a repeat offender may incur a custodial if the court sees no sign the driver is willing to learn from heavy fines and bans.
