New digital camera time

It's time to change, the Canon ixus 300, it is 5 y.o. and time has moved on frown.gif.

I really like the Pansonic Lumix range, but the top end SLR type one's are too top end for me.

I need a point and click, but with some degree of overide.

This is is my current desire, before I press the buy button does anyone have any better ideas.

Reasons I like this one are:-

wide angle 28mm

4 x opt zoom

4 x digi zoom

suberb lens

clever electronics

I'd be interested in what you think 169144-ok.gif

Just ordered my replacement for My Ixus 500.

Ixus 800 IS.

4 x zoom ~(instead of the old 3 x zoom)

Image Stabilsation

2.5" screen with higher res than the old ixus 750 (176,000 pixels against the old 115,000 pixels screen)

It has digital zoon as well, but i leave it permantly turned off, as it just pixelates the pictures and they come out noisy crap.

All digital zoom does is crop the picture. It's not actually zooming at all, it's merely removing the bits above, below, left and right of your subject. It creates the effect of zooming.

I'm waiting for the new Fuji F30.

ISO rating of 3200 and it can take 580 pictures on a single charge. Thats roughly double what a similar CANNON can do and I can't stand it when I get a low battery warning when I'm out for the day.

Its already won digital camera of the year in its price / feature range. Its out later this month early June. 169144-ok.gif

*Shudders*

You could get a much better digital camera for that amount of money mate.

Have a look at the Canon A700 Solid build quality, decent ISO range/zoom etc, and the image quality is spot on for a compact.

Leica lens sort of still pushes me toward Panasonic. Lens is very important, even in the digital age.

Without the extras on the link I posted the base and cheapest net price drops to £315 odd, £50 more than the canon, but with the lens I want and a widescreen 28mm picture.

The 28mm is very useful for home room pictures and since I will need to do a lot of survey pictures in due course I need some better arguments than "this is cheaper and better".

Please put me off the Panasonic, but qualify why you feel it's a poor choice 169144-ok.gif

I was looking at a Sony a while back but the pictures always seem to have too much colour making them look false as the reds weren't as red in the flesh as the picture showed.

Also little things but the memory is expensive and the resolution of the screen looks poor. 115,000 pixels for a 2.5" compared to the Fuji with 230,000 on a 2.5" screen.

Will see what the reviews say about they in a few weeks. Will put my far too old 2Mpixel camera to bed for good. grin.gif

That's the site I got the Sony detail from.

I sold my DSC P10 for the reasons CarMad said, but the new W series seem so much better 169144-ok.gif

It's just a preview screen mate, is it really worth getting a more demanding screen (on batteries) when the file output is what you are really after?

Memory is cheap. Buy SanDisk cards, rather than the Sony OEM ones. They are faster and much cheaper. I got 1GB off Ebay not so long ago for only £25 inc postage.

Go check out very detailed reviews on pretty much all digital cameras at http://www.dpreview.com/ - and I mean detailed. 169144-ok.gif

Take dpreview with a pinch of salt though, as their reviews are not generally considered to be of great use in teh camera industry.

Best thing is, go to somewhere like Jessops, and have a play, asking to see images you've taken, and compare the results yourself. What looks/feels best to you may not be the case for others.

True about the screen. But the fuji Manages 20 pics short of 600 photos on a single charge. A similar model Canon takes only 240 shots. I know which one I would choose on that stat alone. Just hate carrying around extra batteries it defeats the object of having a point and shoot camera. The Sony takes 360 shots, still a fair bit behind the Fuji.

... I think my mind might be made up. grin.gif

If it helps, I have had a Panasonic FZ20 for about a year and it is a cracking camera.

5Mpix, 12x Optical zoom (upto 48x with digital)F2.8 across the range, auto and manual focus etc.

There are a lot of good cameras out there, I liked the fuji's too but the one for the same price took a lot longer to auto focus. The is a very good review site for digi cameras, I will try and find it again for you!

panasonic-dmc-fx9-front.jpg

panasonic-dmc-fx9-back.jpg

purchased one of these fully loaded babies for the bargain price of £150 smashfreakB.gif from Comet this week

was looking originally at the Canon Ixus 800 or Sony T9, but at that price you cant really complain

well worth a look
