L3ETT
Had a couple of gripes with the R32 ever since I got it, so I finally got around to booking it in with the VW dealer to have fixed. 1) A horrible 'metallic' rattle from under the front left of the car mainly when it was cold - so after 5 mins driving the noise seemed to disappear. But got me some funny looks when I drove out of the work car park! 2) The damn seat buckle rattles - it's driving me mad! Anyway, they changed the seat buckles and although a bit better they still rattle over bumpy roads. Worse - the said the metallic rattle under the car needed new cats fitting, which they did under warranty, but the rattle is now worse!! Anyone else experience anything like this? Gti_Fly
Yep - both problems are in my car. I spotted the exhaust rattle when cold too - shocked the hell outta me actually when i once pulled outta my drive and gave it abit of welly. Like you said it sounds metalically, and comes from under the front passenger seat area. But it goes away once warm, so I didn't think it was worth bothering about, espiecally as i had read before from other forums that they all do it. Strange though! Selt belt buckles rattling - yes my drivers side one does it like a bitch. The problem is actually the buckle itself knocking about inside the mechanism. It's just loose - whereas if it was tight fitting then you wouldnt get the awful rattle (the noise makes the car sound cheap!) Contemplated using a small bit of electrical tape just to dampen the noise a little - just on the top of the chrome buckle itself - got to be worth a try. L3ETT
Hmm, problem is, since the changed the cats the noise I hear now is different to the noise I had before. Plus at least the noise went away when it was warm, wheras now its permanent! *UPDATE. VW Just rang to tell me the problem was a loose lambda sensor rattling around.... hmm I'm sceptical but will see at lunchtime if that does fix the problem or not. L3ETT
Well looks like it was the loose lambda sensor then as the rattle seems to be cured. Wont know for sure until tomorrow morning when I start it from cold i guess but looking good so far.
AnthonyB
At least it's sorted now - was the dealer ok about it all, or were they not really interested? You were getting me worried talking about problems when I've only just ordered my R32!!! Anthony..
gammaray27
Hmmm what do you guys mean about the Seat belt rattle? Hope these issues get fixed quick.. Its weird to have an exhaust rattle that goes away when warm.... Misaligned Exhaust????
L3ETT
The seat belt rattle is the metal buckle rattling against the inside of the 'recepticle' (cant think of the proper word for it ). Very annoying. The new 'recepticle' they have fitted has helped a bit, but still rattles over really bumpy ground. As for the exhaust rattle, its tricky to say for certain it was the exhaust. The noise comes from the front passenger side of the car and is sort of like a metallic grinding noise! The reason I hung off taking back into VW was that I read on one forum that a dealer had told another R32 owner 'thats how it should sound'! To be honest Gilbert Lawton in Manchester were excellent about sorting the problems out - new cats can't have been cheap! Problem is now I can't tell you whether it was the new cats that fixed the rattle, or the lambda sensor. After fitting the new cats, I had a different rattle, which they fixed by tightening the lambda sensor. Ah well - I'd advise anyone else with this problem to get VW to sort it out, 'cos it looks to me like a production fault if so many cars have the rattle. CarlT
My seatbelt buckles used to rattle on my R32 as well. That and sunroof, door seals creaking, oh and the rear speaker rattled !!

Argus
Well guys 2 months down the line with my R32 and a few silly problems to report..very trivial i know but wonder if other owners have experianced the same.... 1....the plastic VW centers on the wheels I have lost 2 so far... 2....The front passenger heating/vent duct the one by your feet has come adrift....now this is strange as I had the same silly problem on my 4Motion....yes I know very trivial problems but wondered if I,m the only one..... Woppum
I have heard a frightning sound coming from what i thought was the exhaust. But the car was warm and not hot... I thought that one of the springs which hold the pipes on must have come loose. The sound would get louder under aceleration and even at very low speeds. Then again this was around 2000miles ago and have not experianced it since... A small question... does anyone elce think that the car performs best from cold, the clutch seems to grip better, with more torque... the car really feels the balls from cold... yet a litle disapointing when warm... i think time for a re-map... P.S... Glad to be home
