Oliver891
I currently drive a Mk4 PD150 GTI and have a removable towbar to pull my sailing dinghy about. I want more power and am considering a Mk5 R32, but need to tow still. Does anyone know if the R32 can fit a (removable) towbar? On the Mk4, the reinforcing bar behind the plastic cover/bumper is replaced with the towbar bracket - I don't know if the same applies to the Mk5. If it does then I guess it it's possible. If anyone knows for sure then I'd love to know.
v6tas
Would the center exhausts not cause a problem
Ritey
I'm guessing with the exhaust setup again this would be a no go option as with the MK4 R32
Oliver891
The boat wouldn't mind where the exhausts were. I was hoping that the exhaust position wouldn't affect the fitting of the towbar.....
flintybob
Chuck it on the roof on some bars (assuming it's car toppable)
Oliver891
He he. It is possible, just about. The boat weighs 70Kgs so I'd rather have that behind me rather than on top!
Mook
You can't fit a towbar on the R32, Mk4 or Mk5. This is according to the manual. I've seen it done in the US with a custom build towbar, where the number plate was removable and the removable tow hook bolted into a bracket, but you might not want to go to that extent
ashleywater
Towbar!!!!!!!!!!! on an "R" Thats like slapping a set of oily overalls and a hard hat on Kelly Brook.................. Uh on second thoughts.........
Oliver891
Cheers for the info Mook. I guess I'll have to find out if a Mk5 GTI will take the bar..
Dan32
There is always a way around any problem, so depends how much you'd be willing to spend. Contact couple of towbar manufacturers before writing off the R. As Mook says, there is a MKIV R in the States with a towbar exiting behind the number plate which was custom fabricated Link . The MKV might have more room as IIRC the exhaust box is actually off to one side unlike the centrally mounted MKIV and according to another post, the brochure is saying the towing capacity of the MKV R is TBA and that there is possibly a VW part # available. Oliver891
Good info and link Dan32. I have a friend who works in a UK VW parts dept and has not managed to give me info on if a part exists. Perhaps I'll hassle him some more.
AGK512
Yea I posted the "TBA" last gtime I spoke to VW Custr svs they said it's never going to be offered ?? Why put it in the brochure as possible then If you do find any info please post it as it would be useful for towing my other toy
bibhigh
I have the new Towsure Trade Brochure and there is no listing for an R32. It depends on what manufacturer can get their hands on an R32 to make one to VW spec, but they will only do so if VW has designed the car with towing in mind. Theres a women in my finance office who's hubby bought an Impreza to tow his caravan !!!!. Cant wait until i overtake that sometime soon
Woppum
Well even if it is possible it would look a little odd but i wouldn't let that et in the way of your perfect car. I dont ee the problem in ragging it about during the wek and towing a boat with it on the weekends. Hell I read about a Maybach having one fitted and I think that would look far more odd towing a boat...
Oliver891
You're forgetting the 'removable' bit. Even on my lowly Mk4 PD150 I wouldn't have a towbar sticking out the back all the time. With it removed (takes 5 seconds) you'd never know it had a bar. Why can't I want to drive an R but still use it to tow my boat to events? I'd also use it to take my kid to swimming lessons and drop my gran at the shops. Is that ok?
