Don1981
These are my choices. i already posted about this, but cant find it anywhere?? So which would you choose and why? Few other questions:- reliability, which 1? performace? any thing else budget = £8500 I am looking to buy 1 of the above, but cant make my mind up, maybe some of you here could help?. Does worry me about the burberry cap thing
sayerbloke
Have you driven both yet? If you prefer one more than the other to drive, I'd say go for that one. Yes, there are other considerations, but as I don't think either are majorly lacking in any of the important areas, I'd go with the one which puts the biggest smile on your face. That's a big part of what cars like that are about, right?
Muppetboy
both slightly Burberry cap in my opinion...
RedRobin
I would take sayerbloke's advice and go with the one which puts the biggest smile on your face. Ignore the Burberry cap aspect....As long as you are happy it matters diddlysquat what others think. Some people will attach images to you and pigeon-hole you whatever car you drive. Just borrow a Ferrari and see what reaction you get! Personally I think I would choose the Honda for its excellent engine and upper power. Sparky
The Type R is better IMO. The reliability is far better. You do have to wind up the Type R to get anything out of it, but it's great fun none the less
stevie_d
I would choose the Clio. Best hot hatch for fun imho.

Woppum
Id go for the clio. Its faster, looks better and sure as hell would be more fun. Unlike the Civic it gives you a nice kick in the back while accelerating too!
Ian_C
Agreed - the Clio everytime. Ian
simon737
I've had both from new, the Type R feels quicker (although performance figs there's hardly anything in it), more solid and sounds great, fairly good driving position. The clio has more gadgets, cruise, rain sensitive wipers, automatic xenon headlights and so on. Feels more fun however I did not like the driving position (seat feels to high). Both are crap in the wet. If I had to pick, i'd probably go for the new clio trophy 182, loads of gadgets small and great fun. The Type R has to be driven hard but when it is that grin soon appears!! Test em both, you'll know which one you want. Good Luck!
Don1981
sorry to go on, on this subject - i closed off my half way point on my existing car today with the finance company and out of curiosity i asked the mechanic who inspected my car about both civic and sport clio. He roared with laughter about the clio saying it was unreliable and would have a lot fo problems. He bowed down about the civic though. I was vertually all set to go for the 182 cup till then. I never heard the car have such a slagging. Also seen as the fella has many cars coming his way on a daily basis i have to take his word for it. What are your thoughts? ? manderson
Well im a mechanic, and i would agree with that! Id say the honda is twice the car! You,ll get 100k out a honda without a bit of bother other than routine serviceable items! renault on the other hand, they demolish brake discs, coils, driveshafts, steering racks and the sunroofs on the clios start to rattle after a few years! Just to add, i work in a independant renault specialist so spent alot of time fixing them! And i really cant rate them! But thats jst my mechanical opinion which isnt based on there performance, cost and so on. Id take the civic all day

Sparky
[ QUOTE ] What are your thoughts? [/ QUOTE ] Like I said, the Civic! Sorry, but French cars don't last too well when thrashed, that the Clio would be getting.
D1MAC
I would recommend the Civic (just about) but if you spend your time on bumpy back roads then the Clio might be a better shout. Civic has a better engine and gearbox combo (definitely the 'box, which is one of the best around) and more room but the ride can be a bit choppy and there is no kit (if that's your thing). The Clio will be more fun for more of the time but might be fragile. However, just to disagree with the grease boys to a degree, the Civic isn't always a paragon of Honda reliability - I've had two steering racks and half a front suspension fitted in 2 1/2 years, plus a botched new clutch and an engine that won't idle properly (so I'm looking to palm it off but can't decide on a replacement). Having said that, it's never failed to start or strand me. Thing is, on the budget you're talking about a Clio would be an 04 or better with decent miles and still under warranty. A Civic would be around a 52 plate with 50k+ and no warranty, unless from a dealer. What about alternatives - Leon, ST170, Impreza, nice Accord Type R, 3 series etc etc? Lee_
This thread makes interesting reading, as the clio 172/182 is one of the cars i'll be looking at when i return to the UK. For some reason just doing initial insurance quotes on elephant, they won't touch me on a civic type R but its not too bad on a clio. They're not too dis-similar power outputs ~20 bhp so whats the reason for that, is it theft desirability?
sharky_himself
awrite there , just bought a clio 182 , test drove both the type r , and the clio, and just thought from the off...... the clio was alot more fun, everyone has different opinions, but after test driving them both... the clio for me was the better choice, such a small car.. with soo much power its unreal the reason i joined the forum was really to ask advice on the clio.... just baught it, and i dont want to really modify it, except lowering it? i want it as low as possible without it rubbing, and without having to go to the expense of coilover.. any ideas??? was just going to go for the 30mm springs.. but would i get away with a little bit more of a drop? any ideas appreciated cheers
