Daz
[ QUOTE ] How big did you say your spare room was? [/ QUOTE ] It's quite big and very comfortable
Sparky
[ QUOTE ] This looks okay - just browsing at the mo - so don't read anything into it... Skye Hotel [/ QUOTE ] Looks nice
NewNiceMrMe
Thinking about this - Skye would be quite a nice place for the night. Plus, it doesn't really have any luxurious hotels on it anyway (not from what I recall of my trip there 10 years ago anyway). That hotel looks okay. I just hope to god wherever we stay doesn't object to 10+ blokes making a lot of noise in the bar and restaurant that night... Opinions on the hotel shown so far? Daz - get your name down. RossG
[ QUOTE ] Away to cost up the ferry at the mo - not striclty necessary - but lots of fun in a big group [/ QUOTE ] Ahh. So there's only two ferries a day during the winter. We would need to be in Mallaig for 3.30pm... It's not too costly though. See here
NewNiceMrMe
Hmmmmm, that ferry time could be a problem in my opinion. If we have a breakdown, an accident, or another unplanned incident....we're fecked! I think it means one thing and one thing only...leaving Glasgow at 7am. No problem for me mind you, cos' we'd have a good time on Skye in the late afternoon and plenty of time in the evening for updating TSN online and getting to the bar. NewNiceMrMe
WOAHHHHHHH HANG ON... We can't do that. No service on a Saturday!
RossG
Doh! Oh well - no worries. We chop off the inverary loop earlier in the day, head straight up the A82 to Fort William, then head up the A82 towards Inverness - and take the A87 across to Kyle and the bridge. Sure, it means we are doubling back a wee bit on Sunday - but IMO, Skye's worth it
NewNiceMrMe
I agree. The bridge does make a hell of a detour though Ross! Plus we have to head down to the hotel which is another 35 miles from the bridge (I think?). Thats 45 minutes on Skye's single track roads! rs32
not been to Skye for 20+ years and a convoy will be superb in those surroundings !

There are plenty of single track roads - but we will have to specifically look for them - the road between Broadford and Portree is pretty good
NewNiceMrMe
Oh, and if I'm right....the only Shell Optimax/V-Power filling station anywhere up there is Dunblane - 60 miles from Skye! On the island itself....it's take your luck with the juice they supply!

RossG
[ QUOTE ] Dunblane - 60 miles from Skye! [/ QUOTE ] Dunblane's a bit more than 60 miles from Skye surely... It's only 30 minutes from my house - less on a good day. I'm pretty sure I remember a Shell in Ft William too. Certainly, there will be somewhere selling 'normal' 97. I hope Daz Good point - but trust me - the main road on Skye is a 'big proper road'
Daz
There's a BP in Fort William with Super Unleaded.
Daz
I took a couple of bottle of octane booster with me just incase I couldn't get hold of super. Didn't need it though. Even Esso in Thurso had Super unleaded.
NewNiceMrMe
Yep, there is a BP. The last Shell garage is in Doune - 203 miles from Skye. The next Shell garage after Skye is Inverness - 119 miles.
Will22
I'm ok to spend whatever others are. 17th, Paddys weekend, they'll have to be loads of drink for me then

The next Shell garage after Skye is Inverness - 119 miles. [/ QUOTE ] If I fill up at the former I should make it to the latter with a couple of 5 litre cans in the boot and perhaps a splash and dash at a.n.other brand station. As for hotel costs, I wouldn't imagine it would be hard to get a decent hotel and that stage in the season for around £100 per roon per night unless you do want to stay 5 star. Especially when there are 10+ of us and discounts to be had. Worst comes to the worst I'll bring me tent!
ian_m
I am happy to spend whatever others are on Hotels, this is going to be a LONG way for me to go but I have always wanted to see Scotland so I am happy enough That hotel in Skye looks good to me
