Daz
[ QUOTE ] This one is a bit of a bargain too. 500Gb External Drive for £123.74 [/ QUOTE ] I've just bought one of these and inside the case is a Maxtor Maxline Pro 500GB 16MB SATA II/300 Hard Drive Model Number: 7H500F0 Capacity: 500 GB Cache: 16MB Interface: SATA 3.0Gb/s (300MB/sec) Speed: 7200 rpm Avg. Seek time: 8.5 ms The drive alone sells for more than I've paid for the whole unit
Scotty
hmmm time to think again : The NAS I was looking at needs : "Ultra ATA / 133 **must use hard disk that supports Ultra DMA.**"
Daz
You might want just to try and buy a cheap IDE drive for the NAS box. Check www.scan.co.uk their drives are quite reasonably priced.
Scotty
hmmmm Looking at prices I don't think the amount I'm gonna save is worth short cutting things. A 500Gb ATA did is still around £120 and the NAS box above takes it for £155-160. It will only do FAT32 which limits the max size of file (4GB - which I'll prolly only hit with DVD images or digital Camcorder footage). Should this be a concern? Also I've just seen SATA is up to 4 times quicker the ATA. Having it as a USB print server would also be nice. Any thoughts? How much am I looking at? Scotty
I was just about to buy a Buffalo 500Gb LS Pro for £215.00 when I saw this on the Buffalo site: http://www.buffalo-technology.com/marketing/news-detail.php?newsid=70 Basically they're bringing out a new product to hit shelves at the end of the month with is like the existing Link Station but is DLNA enabled plus add the print server functionality I was after and it doesn't look any more expensive! Just letting you know in case you're about to buy something similar.

techieboy
Scotty, what's the significance of the DLNA certification?
CarMad
I think its a defined standard to server or read music. So if you have a DLNA certified music player it should be able to link into this without any compatibility issues.
techieboy
Ahhh, right. Makes sense. I wonder if the Xbox360 will recognise it.....
shao_khan
I've just picked up a 400Gb one off of an Amazon specials day and that was £69.99 - works well, I'll try to find the specs.
Scotty
There are cheaper units but I wanted a SATA based system and DLNA, plus printer server. Storage is getting so cheap.
