Snail
[ QUOTE ] So hang on is the current 360 not HD? Or am I missing what HDMI is?????? [/ QUOTE ] Both Component and VGA are HD connections. HDMI is used for 3 reasons. 1. The biggest reason is content protection 2. Digital connection (not Analog like vga/component) 3. 1 wire for video/audio. The biggest issue seems to be that many TVs dont support 1080p through their VGA inputs, but do through their HDMI inputs.

Riz [/ QUOTE ] If I read the comments in that link correctly then MS are making $75 profit on each X360 they sell, that's a big margin to be able to dip into just before the PS3 comes out, I'd expect some serious price cuts are already planned for mid/end of february

sufu
[ QUOTE ] According to iSuppli’s most recent analysis, the premium version of the Xbox 360 game machine equipped with hard disk drive has a manufacturing and materials total of $323.30, based on an updated estimate using costs in the fourth quarter of 2006. This total is $75.70 less than the $399 suggested retail price of the Xbox 360. A year ago the total bill of materials (BOM) cost for the Xbox 360 Premium, including hard disk, the DVD drive, enclosures, the Radio Frequency (RF) receiver board, power supply, wireless controller, cables, literature, and packaging, reached $525, well above the retail price of $399. Riz
From IGN.com Looks like it was a hoax. [ QUOTE ] Microsoft Throws Spanner into HDMI Rumour Mill Pictures of upgraded 360 are just "experimentation". by Rob Burman, IGN UK UK, January 10, 2007 - Last week hearts and minds of 360 owners were sent fluttering into overdrive thanks to rumours of a revised console. A photograph purporting to be from a reliable source showed what some people had been silently dreaming about at night - a HDMI port and a bigger hard drive. But like some kind of horrific monster that preys on children's thoughts, Microsoft's Christ Satchell has turned those dreams into nightmares. "At the moment, everything you might have seen is just looking at our experimentation back in Redmond, not really a product that we're thinking about announcing," he told Gamespot. We're now imagining scientists in lab coats pouring strangely coloured liquid from test tubes into the console's disc drive and waiting to see if it explodes. Satchell also touched on the subject on the larger capacity hard drive - which has progressively increased in size in various rumours and now stands at 120GB. "As we produce these services, if we see an increase in pressure that's something that will be interesting to look at, but there isn't any announcement today about any new configuration that may or may not be happening," he added. Maybe if you go to Microsoft HQ and cry on the pavement outside it'll persuade Satchell a little bit more? [/ QUOTE ] So looks like im going to buy one, just hope the price comes down before the PS3 hits our streets. Riz

malagus
M$ broke even just about xmas, nintendo make a profit on each wii they sell, and Sony will lose a couple hundred USD on each launch model, and after that will depend on demand and how they deal with suppliers and customers. Sparky
MS broke even way before Christmas! The x360 was always an easy unit to make. They made a loss on only a small amount of first-shippment units. Sony too a hit on the PS2, at launch, but so far PS3 shippments have exceeded thier targets. Unit prices are falling too, but they'll continue to make a loss for a while.
pingpongpo
I imagine Sony will make a serious amount of dosh when there sell these in Europe. I assume we get the same equipment as US/Japan but pay about twice as much?
Sparky
Don't assume the prices will remain as they are. The head of Sony Europe is still to decide on the costings. Yes Sony will claw back the lost revenue though unit production - they'd not be doing it if they weren't confident in the machine. The x360 has done well, but the Sony PS3 is selling much faster, in comparative selling periods. It's still the machine I am waiting for, rather than the MS console. It will be interesting to see how it goes.

Sparky
For me, it's the Sony PS3, no contest. But then I've seen some of the things they've got planned, and I've never liked the x360 much. I also prefer the PS hand controllers far more than the Microsoft ones.
