CarMad
They aren't going to add an HD drive but you can add that on.. but they are certainly taking the fight to the PS3. No idea which one I will get. Enjoying playing Test Drive Unlimited on the PC too much for the moment at least. Xbox 360 Elite, cooler HDMI and 120gb HD * The Elite will be limited quantities only; that may be as much or as little as a couple hundred thousand. * The case, controller, and Live headset will all be black. It will have all new packaging. * Elite will cost $479, and will be a 3rd SKU; it will be sold alongside Premium and Core packs. * Eventually Elite hardware (in white plastics) will take the role of the Xbox Premium. That is to say, after the Elite is launched and sold out, future Xbox Premiums will have 120GB / HDMI. * We do not yet know exactly when 120GB / HDMI will become the standard for Premium, but it is loosely estimated to be late summer or fall. * Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips. * Prices may remain the same with the 120GB / HDMI hardware upgrade in the Premium Xbox, but we may still see a price cut on the line when 65nm chips start shipping. * The HD DVD drive will not be internal or bundled -- Microsoft never did or nor does not currently have plans to put an HD DVD drive in the 360. * There are no current plans to integrate WiFi into the Elite or future Premiums (although that can always change). AJno1
My launch console is starting to get louder and hotter by the week. Hopefully it can hold out until this is released. Shame they haven't intergrated the HD-DVD though.
CarMad
It drives the cost up though.. think they are doing the right thing to leave it out and people who want it can pay the extra.

Snail
Its now been official confirmed, along with a lot of new media for the XBLVM, lets just hope the distributers can get licenses to bring content to the UK.
Sparky
So it's now black, doesn't burst into flames and has new packaging? Put me down for one.

[/ QUOTE ] Its a good move by Microsoft, firstly they are listening to customers, and secondly, they now have a way round all the crippled TVs that wont support HD through analogue sources. Sparky
I don't think they've had much choice. They are getting a slating in the US for the number of units failing due to heat, so a good time to upgrade the box.

[/ QUOTE ] Well, the hardware is alledgedly exactly the same (save the output obviously), it doesn't include the future 65nm chips. So it shouldn't run any cooler than the previous model. ashleyadam
The PS3 has only been out a couple of days and they are pannicking already all the bad press about PS3 mainly came from competitors. As far as I know Xbox has always had overheating problems or at least our first 2 units did.
Sparky
"Elite models run cooler than normal 360s" Seems odd though as they said they'd altered the cooling despite the lack of the 65nm fabrication. Either was, I'm surprised they didn't add HD-DVD to it as standard. Limited numbers of the black model before the hardware is then shipped in normal while Xbox colours. Sparky
I don't see that as bad press. PS3 is currently outselling xbox at the same stage in it's life and MS were always going to address the heat issues with the xbox, and to modernise it a little, as it helps refresh interest in the product. [/ QUOTE ] Eh ? This has been a badly kept secret for months plus the new units will have much larger hard disks to cope with the video on demand type service that they are going to offer. I hardly call that panicking seems more like they're making improvements after nearly 18 months of product use . As I understand it the elite edition in black will be replaced with a white version in the near future and this will become the main version. Snail
[ QUOTE ] PS3 is currently outselling xbox at the same stage in it's life . [/ QUOTE ] Completely agree, but thats not the whole story, i got my 360 about a month after launch, and it was still a pain to find them. It would be a much fairer comparison if all 3 consoles had released with the same amount of consoles.
Snail
[ QUOTE ] Is that it are you serious? [/ QUOTE ] Nope, i could get a huge list of links if i had the time, that was the first link i found. As 2 major examples, the PS3 has released background downloading on the last update, but from what im reading, they cant even support scaling on all TVs correctly yet. And the supposed FullHD console still doesn't come with a HD cable in the box.
ashleyadam
Snail why dont you just say you cant find any really bad press regarding uk launch, personally I think machine has turned out excellent. Online gaming seems great, controllers are excellent, even the online update was good and if anything like PSP I can only see good times ahead! Only proble is keep on losing controller

[/ QUOTE ] The only reason MS have scored so well with the userbase is that they had no challenges from Sony when they launched the 360. If the PS3 came out at the same time, it would be different. We're commenting on this far too early. It's amusing reading some forums from 360 owners and how they are just slating the PS3 with little or no proper statements when the machine hasn't had the same amount of time as the 360 has. Give it a year, then we'll see how it's panned out.

[/ QUOTE ] Id completely agree, but then the PS3 forums are exactly the same, everybody uses the same 3 arguements... 1. The console breaks 2. You have to pay for online 3. When you factor in wireless, Bluray, online etc its actually a cheaper console. Yet theres no mention of the fact the 360 has more games, all the cross platform are better on the 360, the big hitting games (for instance GTA) are no longer PS3 exclusives, etc.
