PSN at 1.5 million users

Recommended Posts

Yeah was reading that this morning. Quite impressive.

Ok Snail... where are you? grin.gif

-----------------

At this 6 month mark, Microsoft had only 500,000 users on Xbox Live. For those of you who think that's not a fair comparison, the 500,000 number also includes the free silver edition.

Six million pieces of content have been downloaded from the PlayStation Store. They didn't announce the ratio of free to paid content, but it's an impressive number nonetheless.

Finally, the 1.5 million users have logged in a total of 115 million times. So using our impressive math and reasoning skills, that's an average of 77 log-ins per PS3 owner. Not bad at all Sony.

To be fair though, im guessing you mean XBL on the original xbox. At that stage online gaming was a new toy which nobody really understood.

After 3+ years of xbox, and >1 year of 360, online gaming is the norm these days, and thus Microsoft had made the market for Sony to step into!

Id be interested to know what the figures were like for the original PS2 online, compared to the original xbox.

And by the way, I have a PS, a PS2 and a PSP..

You bought these in spite of your loathing of Sony, or you hate Sony because of these? I own all four consoles and think they're all great. Only problem I felt was the lack of online with the ps2 vs. Xbox, but that's sorted now with the ps3. I have to say, making it a freebie was a great idea! Can't beleive it's not advertised though.

I wouldn't say i have a loathing for Sony, just a preference for other brands.

Take their tellies.. not a patch on Panasonic.

PS2.. good consule, but as you say.. no online gaming at all.

people may dislike the 360, but it ticks all my boxes.. some of the online experiences i have had are just extraordinary. I met this French guy on Gears of War, couldn't speak a word of English, but feck me.. we destroyed the place.. magic 169144-ok.gif

We can't really compare the PS2 to current PS3 for online activity, as it was a poor effort, but then the market was different when the PS2 was born.

The PS3 isn't in this for a short time. MS strategy is poor and their Elite box shows just that. They are jumping all over the place and have no clear defined roadmap to product development. It's upsetting a serious amount of US gamers too.

Sony will claw back, they've had a heavier investment to make but I think their strategy is the better one. I'm not getting in to a console war as frankly I couldn't give a toss anymore, but MS are doing their usual with their products.

I was playing Motorstorm online the other night and it was a blast - so the PS3 easily matches xbox 360 in my book.

Either that, or it shows MS actually listen to things their customers want, and respond 169144-ok.gif

To be honest, thats the problem with the internet, people only go on there to moan! grin.gif

For every person that moaned, theres another that is happy they can now get 1080p through their HDMI port, because the TV manufacturer was too lazy to support it through Component/VGA.

Depends how you look at it. A Hyundai will drive at speed from A to B, in the same way a BMW will, the Hyundai is a lot cheaper, but is it as good?

Sony isn't that far behind MS. Don't forget that the Sony install base of PS2 owners are only starting to buy the console now and Sony themselves just released details on nearly 19 games due out this year and early 2008.

Also Sony will be launching 80gb Model in Korea only 19th June which will increase the user base.

In terms of user base on PS3 vs 360 then yes, they are several million behind. But if you take a proper look at the strategies of both they are vastly different and MS, as usual, are just in it for quick hits now, and not long term direction.

Potential PS3 buyers have been waiting, and rightly so, for Sony and others to pull their fingers out regarding games. This is why I say it's unfair to slate the PS3 at this time. The machine itself if a very good bit of kit, and I do still feel it's a better machined console overall, but Sony were slow to get the games to it.

The have since released details of a number of games that actually look good and worth buying. The line up of launch titles were not great although there were some good ones in there. Once these other titles are out and the PSN store has been properly used (again, this they've said will follow later this year), then the competition will grow.

Sony doesn't have so many exclusive rights to games now, as they did have, but if you read a lot of what is being posted lately, developers are starting to see the sheer power of the Cell processor and the abilities of farming out tasks to the other cores. Some dev houses have said they aren't even scraping the surface of what it can do, and yet the games will look the same as the 360 version's - on a machine that's been out a lot longer.

All I am saying is the strategies are different - and Sony were late to the party. Doesn't mean their offerings are poor though, as many on here want us to believe.

I don't doubt that the PS3 is a good machine, and i think you'll find that i have never called it poor.

My concern is that Sony are selling this machine as more than a pure gaming machine. They have put in blue-ray as an example.

I don't want anything more than a playstation. My games machines aren't hooked up to the best telly in the house. I don't want an all in one solution.

If they had spent all their time on just developing a games consule, they wouldn't have been late to market and they would still enjoy the lions share of the market.

As it is the PS3 and 360 are too close to call (maybe not in build but certainly in terms of game play). It's a similar argument to Audi and BMW.. both drive down the road, but some will always have a preference for one or other.
