I see that mistake all the time on the b-roads round here. And you always have to assume the car you're overtaking will be a pratt and speed up a bit - so you need to compensate for that too! 169144-ok.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Sorry but I'm missing something, unless you were doing exactly how you put it above - why would comparative perfomance be an issue? At whatever speed you were travelling at, the performance is how quick the RS4 could get past you surely. This is where I'm getting confused..

[ QUOTE ]

Fair enough the RS4 sounds rather yummy, but why do some people think the performance difference at speed is sooo much greater than it actually is. doh!!

p.s. I was quite impressed with the sooty actually, I know its performance is similar to S4, but seems S4 vs RS4 difference isn't that great?

[/ QUOTE ]

It does sound like you were speeding up when he tried to overtake, maybe it's the turn of phrase that's confusing 169144-ok.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

I had to slow down as he overtook to ensure he got past safely.

If I hadn't slowed down he'd wouldn't of made it. Relative performance is relevant as was enjoying the country roads and accelerating out of bends.

He assumed an RS4 could accelerate significantly quicker at speed - which it cant. 169144-ok.gif

Anyone who buys a 'brand' is essentially a 'twat' .Companies don't make money selling stuff at cost. The difference between what it costs to make things and the cost to sell things is the profit and this profit is dictated by the 'brand value'.The bigger the brand the more you can charge'twats' to drive around in your aspirational brand. I could go on but there's a science behind this stuff and it would get more boring than it already is.

Aha! ... you're talking sense here. Welcome to Tyresmoke! beerchug.gif

on the road, you're never going to see a huge difference between 2 similar-weighing cars, each with oodles of torque.

Sorry if it pisses on the bonfire of people with "faster" cars than a crappy sooty - but don't blame the messenger for the laws of physics!

[/ QUOTE ]

Ah, it depends on how fast that "faster" car is! grin.gif

The 3.0 TDI is around 450Nm isn't it - some 20Nm more than the RS 4. The RS 4 needs a good workout to deliver it's best, and I've found that not everyone's prepared to 'row' the gearbox hard enough, or hang on to the revs long enough to liberate the horses.

Of course, the rules change when you've got over 500Nm (C5 RS 6, D3 W12 or S8) and 450 PS - then it's not going to be difficult to overtake a 3.0 TDI at a rolling speed.

I should know, I've owned all four engines, and done many a country lane run in them! 169144-ok.gif

Define not difficult??

50nm difference is bugger all. That's my point. And the 450Nm is stock.

You'll still have to take the big petrol engines to 5000RPM+ to get past and you'll only get past if you're right up the arse, on a straight, and have plenty of room.

It's not like overtaking an astra or something where the difference is huge. The power gains needed to accelerate quicker increase exponentially with the power of the target car.

e.g. 400BHP vs 300BHP is a lot closer in the real world than 300BHP vs 200BHP. And 200BHP vs 100BHP is a breeze! I'm sure many GTI drivers will testify to how easy it is to overtake a 1.6 A3.

But an S4 driver can't say its a doddle to overtake a GTI - 'cos its not.

Similarly an S8 will not burn past an S4. The S8 will need ragging, and will need a good stretch to do it in.

The point was, performance cars aren't as fast comparitive to others as some people expect 169144-ok.gif

Anyway...back to the point about Audi's being driven mainly by twats... and 'garcon' who as we can see from his Suedo intellectual posts is already a well qualified 'twat'.

[/ QUOTE ]

Highflyin mate, doesnt matter what car you drive whether its an Audi or a Ford you will always be a twat coffee.gif

7200 rpm to be exact*! grin.gif

Yes, I know, tha's physics. However, I was just being a cheeky chappie and pointing out that it's much easier to overtake a 3.0D in an S8/W12/RS 6 than it is in an S4 or RS 4. There's no replacement for displacement! smile.gif

Agreed.

Hmm, something I've been thinking about - £750 with QS Tuning adds another 50 ponies IIRC. Money well spent, IMHO.

* In a D3 S8; less in an RS 6 or W12.

OK 'Northern Monkey' (Alastiar) and 'Garcon' you've had your fun....if swapping unsults online is your idea of fun...personally it's not mine, but then I'd also rather spend time with friends and family than locked in my spare room with my computer in my boxy excutive home with my aspirational 'twats' car on the drive (Nothern Monkey are you listening that was for you).

Anyway I've lost my tack now...ah yes.. I'm happy to go on trading insults and clearly I have gotten to you both which is excellent fun, and a clear example that you are in the presence of superior intellect that can manipulate your posts - but I would much rather engage in polite debate (note the word debate) with poeple who are mature enough to give and take critisism and know a bit about cars.

'Garcon' your Jeremy Clarkson comments were genuinly funny and your post are really entertaining - But 'Nothern Monkey' you really are a 'prat'. I'm sure this has all be great fun for those reading, but it's game over now chaps.

I'm yet to be convinced you do understand the concept of polite debate, but that aside I'm perfectly content to take the above as an apology and end our bout of silliness.

And in the renewed spirit of bonhommie I'll overlook your obvious mistake with regard to 'superior intellect'.

I really love the way you assume how i live tongue.gif I hardly call a house with land and stables on the fringes of the countryside an executive box yelrotflmao.gif

Plus my 520d is not some "aspirational" company car, its my own car i bought with my own cash and is simply a workhorse, ive got other toys for fun. If your so "highflying" why are you still in a 320d smirk.gif
