garcon magnifique
[ QUOTE ] Yes "Monstrosity"....fast monstrosity granted but a monstrosity none the less !! [/ QUOTE ] It looks ok from the back (*). Which let's be honest is the only angle you're likely to see from a Golf (and that'll be brief). Mook
Now they've lost the stupid spoilers, I could almost live with owning one. Almost...
garcon magnifique
Having now seen the STI in the flesh - in dark grey, silver and blue - two things sprang to mind. It definitely looks better than it does in the pictures, and has an altogether different stance and appearance to the standard Impreza hatch (which is about as exciting as a 1990s Kia). The only thing that really lets it down for me looks-wise are those rear lights. Look great at night, but waaaay too shiny and bling in daylight. I'm hoping there'll be some aftermarket option to keep the layout but tone it down a bit. [/offtopic] Back to the age old question. The Golf R36. Given the launch of the Passat R36 and the likelihood it'll sell about 6 units in the UK, I reckon there's every chance of a Golf R36. If it does arrive, I'd predict it'll appear a year or so in to MkVI Golf production. Does anyone know if there will definitely be a MkVI Golf R32? If not, then the R36 steps straight in, if there is, I'd bet on a mid-series upgrade to R36.
N3WOB
Like the salesman said, it's definately happening and he'd do me a special deal by reducing the deposit needed down to £1500. I snapped his hand off. Can't wait
garcon magnifique
If I'm honest I reckon your salesman is speculating. For your sake, hopefully he's right!
N3WOB
Well I'm absolutely convinced having met and spoken to him. He said, "to be honest if I had the money mate, I know what I'd do. Much of the bodywork styling is going to based on prototype VW built with the 600hp rear mounted engine that they featured on Top Gear. They're only going to produce a really short run, and they're all going to be sold well before we get the finalised spec and pictures. One thing's for sure, it's going to put out at least 350 horses.."

STI is what they call STDs nowadays round here as disease is such a nasty word there calling them infections now and i don't want a car which says Sexual Transmitted Infection on the back. The R32 models are great car but ever since the VR6 first made it into a golf etc its held the other engines and models below it back. As an example the mk3 GTI 16V was wound back power wise for production to fit in the range so not to upset the VR6. The mk4 again the same thing. So if they don't make it in, it will be missed but at least the TFSI (now called TSI just to confuse people) units will not be held back. Im not even sure if the R36 engine would fit under the scirroco bonnet looking at it.
DanG
[ QUOTE ] One thing's for sure, it's going to put out at least 350 horses.." [/ QUOTE ] Not sure if that was sarcasm or not The current FSI Version of the VR 3.6 engine is developing 280bhp in the Touareg, and a rumoured 296bhp in the Passat which is more than enough to make a Golf into a very entertaining car indeed. 350bhp from the 3.6 lump would mean turbo(s), huge emissions and huge cost. The latter two being a project killer. I do think they will make a R36, but cant see it being in the Mk V, theres no point. But put it in the Mk VI and youve got a great selling point. As for the new Subaru - I still can't like it. Looking at the RB320 and the UK270 and current Legacy, they are great looking cars..... And lets face it, Subaru have a history of taking a fine looking vehicle and turning it into one of the ugliest things on the road!
garcon magnifique
Personally, having owned four of them, I can't honestly say the Impreza has ever been good looking.
DanG
RB5 and P1 were iconic, and then the released that bug eye 'thing' . RB320 is also nice looking, even with the wing, if a little pricey.
garcon magnifique
To me, the Impreza saloon looked steadily more purposeful with each facelift. The Mk 1 was no looker to begin with, but finished with the RB5 and P1. The bug eyed monstrosity (that truly was) was quickly replaced with the 03 model - a vast improvement - and the run out 06/07 model saloon was better still. The RB320 looks truly demonic, but is just waaaay over the top for me to consider as a daily driver. I expect Subaru will follow a similar path with the hatch. Facelifts and familiarity will mean it becomes more acceptable to those who currently hate it. I doubt it'll ever be as in yer face as the Mk1 and Mk2 Imprezas, but it's by no means a bad start. JonC
[ QUOTE ] I think a R36 will be released but only at the end of the current Golf shape and for a very limited time..... and expensive. It will probably look something like this..... Riz [/ QUOTE ] Now, that front end is beginning to look good. The only thing IMO that lets the .:R down looks-wise is the front end.
