Scotty
It looks like even taking a device into Switzerland that has the ability to warn of cameras etc is now illegal even if you don't have any camera POI's set to warn. PDF file HERE It seems that they don't want to warn people of the danger spots where "safety" cameras have been installed [edit] Actually as long as you don't have Swiss warnings it looks like you're ok. I wonder if the Euro databases contain any Swiss warnings [/edit]
Soapsuds
I lent my unit to may mate for his trip to Italy last year. When going through the borders he had it confiscated!! They also gave him a 700EUR fine!!! Madness..... I didnt realise this law personally. Wonder how long it will take for the UK to come up with this. byron13
Hmmmm - hopefully in the UK we would be able to campaign against it a bit more. Love to see them justify banning them. Er we are banning a safety device honest!!
cruiser647
I am sure the EEC/EU have already ruled about these devices. Switzerland is not in the EU and so can do (and usually do) as they please!

[/ QUOTE ] ....I believe that there's a hack which gives the cam locations visually but without any audio warning. I went to France and Italy last year and was stopped by the Italian police and docs inspected with my PogoAlert operational and in full view but no problems. The trick to get into Austria without stopping at Customs is to buy a sticker in Germany. I didn't stop at Customs in Italy either.
simkna
A sticker from Germany to allow you to just wander into Austria and Italy - wasn't a Swas-sticker was it? Si.

Dr_Watson
I wouldn't really worry about it, the Swiss often use a small laser device with a red flash, it sits in a tripod and is difficult to spot. These devices are hidden where ever it is best to pick up speeders, that is regardless of accidient black spots, schools etc. The sit them behind sign posts, tree's or on the parcel shelf of unmarked police cars. The bill comes in exactly 2 weeks later, no points are givin, just bans and mega fines if you are a fair bit above the limit. You just need to stick to the speed limit (50mph on main roads wtf) or be prepared to pay £17 for doing 53kmh in a 50 zone or up to around half your monthly salary if you have been very naughty. I've get one fine a year, usually for around 90 in an 80 zone...lucky we dont have points, everybody would be banned. I was banned for a month for undertaking on the right side, I came up level with a car in the middle lane as I exited the auobahn. He gave me a warning and said nowt will happen, maybe something to sign through the post later, well, a ban came in a few weeks later, I could pick which month I could take it though. I was feckin lucky, he was in an unmarked Impreza Turbo, same as my car at the time, when he passed me I was lucky I didn't decide to race him! He got in front and switch on the rear LED's "bitte mir folgen"...sheisse!
Brabus
Scheisse indeed. I got 250 GBP fine for doing 106 km/h in an 80 km/h zone. Don't mind too much the fine but I do mind the fact that if I get caught speeding within two years I'll get an automatic one month (or more) ban. That sucks. Scotty
I'm so glad I didn't know all the Swiss rules when I did one of my Euro tours. As it was the ignorance made for some great driving and a massive amount of overtaking. Since then I've learnt why. I guess I was very lucky
jwo
i haven't ventured back to switzerland in a few years. last time going to italy i triggered a speedy camera at about double the limit. i got let out of switzerland on my return journey! my micro roadpilot didn't pick that camera up!!! Dr_Watson
Swiss rules, what about.... - you must only indicate when exiting a roundabout, by the time the do indicate they are already off the r'about so its pointless. - if you stop suddenly, you can be at fault and not the guy who follows 2ft from your bumper. People actually follow police cars so close here and they don't do jack about it. - Speed camera's can be put anywhere and hidden in anyway - Switch off engine everytime at long wait traffic lights and at train crossings - Main roads have a 80kmh limit only. - Must change your tyres 2 times a year summer/winter - 2 year warranty is standard, hardly ever see a 3 year deal. - If the police stop you because 1 headlight bulb is out, you fix it there and then or you are walking home! A friend of mine got stopped for this, she called the TCS (RAC), they came out, he give the headlight a knock, and the light came back on. Cost her a fortune as she had to re-new the membership before they would come out. Police stayed with her, if it wasnt fixed, they would give her a lift to the train station! - Its hard to stand out from the crowd if thats your thing. Most sports cars are owned by old folks, Average R32 driver age looks to be around 60! Top of the range cars dont really stand out from the crowd. Golf GTI is probably the most popular model of Golf on the road. A sunday drive usually means getting passed by Gallardo's and Carrera GT's, anything else is just an everyday car There are a few + points though compared to the Uk - Cars are cheaper - Fuel is cheaper - Road tax is cheaper - New models are available earlier - Roads are billiard flat, pots holes dont really exist! - No points system, just fines unless you go a bit too mental - Easier to sort out insurance, tax, car selling and buying as the number plate belongs to you, not the car. - Garages are generally of high standards, customer service is very good, repairs are high quality. - There are some magical roads to drive - Davos to Bormio is my fav! - Nearly new cars are readily available with all types of specs are available and are very easy to find using autoscout24. I have a Golf GT Sport 170PS. 7000km, exact spec I was looking for, Silver, Arm rest, Cruise etc 7 months old, only registered at VW garage so I go on as 1st own, £17500 I traded my R32, 2003, 56000Km. £10000 trade in. Not sure how that compares.

In one section of curvey road we over took 27 cars within a couple of miles. There were so many we started counting hence I remember the total. They were all nicely spaced so we just kept leap frogging. This was with Mrs Scotty, looking out for traffic and telling me when to go. I guess all the other cars knew something that we didn't!
