Digital Camera recommendation please

Apologies - this must get asked all the time. As my excuse, I'll say that something new might have come along recently that merits the question asking again.

Requirements:

- Best quality photos

- Compact so it can go out with me

- Optical Zoom: yes, I think so, so long as it doesn't make it too big

- Preference for SD cards 'cos I like them

- Good looking

- Budget? I don't know....up to £300 is that enough?

Any thoughts? +++

I've got an Ixus 960 (in Titanium don't you know - talk about vanity) and it is spot on. The new 970 has a 5x optical zoom which is a winner, plus it has the option to take the photo through the eye piece rather than looking at the screen which is good for sunny days. One thing I will say though, get a big SD card because at 12 mega pixels mine chews through a 1Gb card at max quality in no time.

Oh, one thing I would say is that you should get a case since if you are not careful (i.e. pissed) the screen can scratch. I am sure a screen protector would sort this. Do I have one - no ...

Hmm, little twist here...

Was umming and erring about decisions but needed a camera so as an interim measure I found a deal that looked good on Jessops (I just know someone's going to tell me it isn't!)

Casio Exilim EX-Z1080

2GB SD Card

Casio Camera Case

Next day delivered for £133

Which I thought sounded good for what I believe to be an OK camera (tell me if its not!)

So, that sorts the "not having a camera" problem but still looking for "the one"

Quite liked the look of the Panasonic DMC-TZ5 (albeit a bit chunky) but the looks of the Ixus 970 didn't really do anything for me - looked a bit girly ;)

Let's see how the Casio performs and if its any good as a point/shoot/going out camera then might consider getting a digital SLR to complete the fleet. I bet you can't wait for me to ask for recommendations there! :P

If its no good I'll be back in the hunt as per the original request...

Bloody cameras...just spotted this (not sure I want one just yet) but it looks like a good deal....

Canon EOS 450D + 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens + Free Shoulder Bag £499.99

Then Jessops have a "£10 off of Digital SLRs" before midnight July 23rd and then factor in the Canon £50 cashback offer and you arrive at

£439.99 - for the body, lens and a bag!

Good?

Thats not going to get the looks vote though is it.:)

You buy a camera for it's looks?

At the moment, and don't forget i see a lot of pro-work, I like the stuff canon is producing.. well made, good price and fantastic results.

 the Casio Exilim will break within moments - the sceen on the back is too big and the chassis not stiff enough leading the LCD to flex and then crack unless you're really careful with it +++

Brilliant! :roflmao:

Now you mention it, I think one of the guys that works for me has one. Last time I saw it he was having it repaired

Thing is, used to have the metal Exilim-S3 and whilst it didn't take the greatest pictures, it was so compact and indestructible.

Doh. Was it too good to be true?? I should add that its primarilly going to be a getting pissed camera :ffs: Hopefully the case will save it....

 I had 2 and they both went the same way - cracked LCD's - then I went back to Canon for a little Ixus i7 Zoom, perfect as a 'getting pissed' camera - solidly built and well capable of taking knocks and drops (small screen too!) - somehow I've lost the dock/charger for it so am on the look out for another one +++

On the bright side, it was "only" £100....

Last time I make an impulsive purchase at 3am

Not me but Mollox had looks as a top priority. I use my Canon 40d as my P&S know the pictures it takes are sublime and well worth any hassle. +++
