Hi all.

I am having a nightmare.

I bought an B6 A4 Cab 2.5TDi last may, for a day i loved it.

We have since and continue to gro further apart because of the continuing noises it produces, which the independant garage i bought it from have now FOUR times been unable to find the sources... !

I have posted this issue type before in the hope a MASTERTECH looking over the forum would dtep in and save my relationship.

These are the two issues i have and if anyone can help, there is a chance i will love them forever !

1. Driving normally on any road type, especially evident on smooth but undulating road at low speed the is a clunking/knocking from the engine bay area (could be suspension/strut areas). It is always there but sometimes louder than usual. Due to noise especially with it being a Cab it is not so evident at speed, but so annoying i sometimes debate wether or not to set it alight !! More because i spent a fortune on it, and am now gutted !

2nd, this has everyone stumped. At Idle, gently rev past 1000rpm and allow to fall back through. At almost bang on 1k rpm you hear a very prominant "click" noise. This has been here since i bought the car.

At first the garage thought it was a Vaccum noise, they now think it is an EEC solenoid ???? !! Either way, it drives me nuts and should not be there.

This is my 10th car, easily the most expensive and lowest milage 35k, and i have never come across anything that has made me more dissapointed.

After 4 x at the garage i have given up with the same excuses at the sign off, and i have been left to deal with it.

I WANT TO STRUT out to my AUDI and love it ... that seems so far away i could weep !!..

My next move is to an AUDI garage, but feel this is gonna cost me a fortune just to diagnose ( If they Can !!!)

Any advice most gratefully accpeted and info on the best scottish AUDI taken.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME SOLVE THE MYSTERY AND LOVE MY BLACK CAB AGAIN?????

:devil::devil::devil::devil::devil::mad:

A number of us run Cabs - I myself have had a B6 and I'm on my second B7.

Without wishing to be unkind you have wasted your time taking your car to a non-Audi dealer or at least an Audi specialist.

Why? The Audi people see these cars, day in, day out and the chances are that because your vehicle is a mass-produced item will have a pretty fair idea of what is normal and whats not.

The Audi dealer can hook your car up to the diagnostic systems and find our if your car has been subject to any specific recalls or software upgrades. They have access to technical service bulletins and all the material that Audi share with the dealers.

Sure Audi dealers are expensive, but your car was equally so when it was new and remains a high quality piece of engineering. If you don't look after it properly (Audi/Audi specialist) then more expense and disappointment awaits you!

Thankyou my friend.

The ONLY reason i have not ventured over to AUDI so far was of two reasons : 1. I bought from an Independant and as such was hoping to have the issue addressed under their warranty.

2. I honestly thought (idiot) that it was a simple find, with the right gear/experience and more importantly EFFORT, which i think we are lacking here,... that and interest.

Audi next week i fear. (twitching wallet)

I will be approaching trading standards to see if i can have the faults at least partially paid for by the indep. garage.... we'll see.

Thx fella.

I'd suggest you go to a local Audi specialist - not the local Audi dealer - the specialist will more likely give you good advice instead of just expensive advice.

Totally agree with you Dave, check over on the A8 forums for what the dealer done to my car when trying to do a simple diagnostic! Deffently take it to a specialist or get someone with a VAG COM to pull up some fault codes.

Hi Dudes,

Well here it is .....

"Two noises, the (a) Rev thru 1000 rpm 'click' noise and,..

(b) the driving along and click, clunk, click on any SMOOTH bump or even on the straight and narrow..."

As above, tit went to independant at least 4-5 times with NIL/NADA/SQUAT !!! Success, thanks for nuthin you *******.

As suggested, it was off to AUDI, and after a day they scored 1 out of a possible 2, for noise sourcing and rectification, and 9/10 in the thank ***k, i am almost lovin my AUDI again.

the (a) 1000 rpm click, they could not find, even with Chassis Ears on valves, and other things, so if anyone has any other ideas please post!

the (b) driving miss daisy clickity clunk, turned out to be, NOT the struts, steering or suspension as first thought, NOT the engine mounts or links, but the FECKIN ROOF !... after 3 road tests today the wee wizard and his other magicians noticed when they put pressure on a part of the Can roof it stopped. They adjusted 2 x adjustment rods on the Hood mechanism and it stopped!..it friggin stopped !. They said it was a right pain as the sound would transfer around the car, (i had noted this) but they got it.

Instead of charging me 7 hrs at £90 p/h as advised, they charged me 2.5hrs..+ £28 for 2 bulbs fitted !!, that said, i am £236 lighter, but feel £1000 quid happier !!

Note my B6 A4 Cab friends.. that noise you might hear could be the bloody roof and not what you think...ignore your senses and save your money & heartache !.. I wish someone had posted this to me 5 months ago !!!

Happy Motoring Amigos..

P.s i am still waiting for a hero to solve the 1000 rpm saga..anyone hard enough ?

Once through 1000 rpm, but that is stationary and thru most gears, thru 1000 - click..... it falls back to 0 passing 1000.. lighter "click"

All the time.

Still sounds like the EGR to me... engine speeds up from tickover reaches 1000rpm and the EGR valve opens (click), engine slows down reaches 1000 rpm and the EGR valve closes (click). The EGR valve has to be closed at tickover, but open when driving so that some of the exhaust gases get re-burnt which lowers emission levels.

Thanks fella's.

At AUDI, the chap did say his thoughts were an EGR valve or Throttle Valve, if thats the same thing ???

During his troubleshooting, he said that the noise was far more evident toward the left wheel well area, but due to the engine the noise is ONLY heard from inside the car ?.. this i can confirm.

He also had "chassis ears" on the valve and didn't hear it ! ?

That throw any new light?... or a big figgin duvet on it !?

Thanks amigos

Would you know if that is replaceable ?

When i went to pick shiny girl up, they were describing their fault diagnosis and pointed to a 2003 A4 Cab in the car park and said, that although a mite quieter, was making the noise too, even though they hadn't actually come across it before ? !! Perhaps its a B6 thing ?

Would you happen to know where this little sucker is located ?

and while we are here, what are next sat's euro lotto winning numbers ?

Hi I just sold my 2003 A4 B6 2.5 tdi cab which I owned for nearly 4 years - I loved it but got the itch for a high performance motor again......an S4.

My experience - the soot-chucker A4 made a click when the ignition was left on long enough for the glowplugs to be hot enough to fire up the diesel fuel in cold conditions.

Otherwise the car was very up-together and quiet indeed inside at all speeds with no odd noises squeaks, ticks etc and I drove it for 60k miles without incident and it still felt really tight when I sold it - quiet except at idle at the lights with the top down when it sounded like a panzer tank! (which I kinda liked).

My 07 B7 S4 cab is considerably more boomy at cruising speeds despite an acoustic hood but it sounds fab under hard acceleration with the top down!

So it sounds like there are a coupla issues with your cab and I can only say that Audi stealers know their cars and are great at sorting out little niggles - for £££££ - but thats what Audi ownership costs - I use them and take a hit but enjoy sorted cars.

Hope this helps and very happy to discuss A4 2.5 Tdi Cab ownership!

Well . . . after Audi adjusting the Cab roof rods, the noise which "appeared" to be from the front, had gone!

Two weeks, £234 down, and the F****** noise is back!...

Why does someone up there hate me ??

I went back today to be told they had adjusted as far as they dare, and that the noise MUST be something else... Its isn't.

In 2 mins i unlatched the hood, and drove 3 miles without a single click.

Hood latched .. click/click.clank/click ............. not the hood ?

Does ANYONE know of or have a procedure for hood adjustment, locations and/or access to these points ?

And why the HOOD? Anyone else get this sh*t ?:(
