Automated garage doors

Has anyone had one fitted? Anything to particularly look for?

Would be really helpful if anyone had recommendations for a Midlands based company that specialises in them. Fancy getting one fitted but there is no way I am going to randomly pick someone from the web or Yellow Pages!!

The motor unit is bolted to the ceiling and a motor pulls a chain attached to the top of the door pulling it back on side runners.

Here is a pic of the web that shows it :

Thanks for that Jez, problem I have is the ceiling is really high, although I guess I could put a couple of joists up, just that I rent the garage so don't want to do anything that ca't be put back to normal.

Same as mine, but you can build a platform that hangs down from the roof +++

So can you disable the handle so you no longer have to lock it??

I mean so the remote does everything??

Yes, you can disconnect the motor if it goes wrong so you can open it by hand, but otherwise you would be trying to open it against the mechanism.. not impossible but certainly difficult!

you can also get ones like this jackshaft model that have a motor off to the side:

(sorry it's a US link but I'm sure you can get them in the UK)

Amazon.com: Liftmaster 3800 RJO Residential Jackshaft Garage Door Opener: Your Store

This one has a battery backup in the event of a power failure so I'm guessing you could do away with an outside handle all together with this one ?

Its not locked so much as the motor resists (prevents) it opening. There is a little clip that connects the lever attached to the door to the worm mechanism & when you disconnect that you can open like a normal garage door.

They are (quite) convenient but if you have the door wired to an alarm you have to park & get out sharpish to deactivate the alarm (also needed a panel put in garage for this) are slow to open, you have to wait when you leave incase they shut, sense an error then open again (making the alarm mis-set) + you need a 2nd access to the garage in the event of failure so you guessed it the main one here is permanently disconnected...

Thanks guys.

Actually, can you always open these doors from the inside even when locked? Does the lock just stop the handle from moving and pulling the cable that releases the catch?

So you just leave it locked 24/7 and use the remote??

If you have inside access you generally get a switch to open the door from the inside and a pull cord in the event of a power failure, outside you get a pin pad that acts in the same manor as the remote, I.E you key in a code to the fixed pin pad and it triggers the door from the outside. Thats how mine works anyway. +++
