Why make comparisons with Audi's and Cupra's and other cars at all? - The questions to yourself should simply be : -

1 - Test drive - Did I love it?

2 - Do I like its style/looks?

3 - Do I have the funds available?

Wise words.......

1. Not yet

2. Kind of

3. Nope.... never ever..... lol

Volkswagen have gone loopy.... end of!

Because I'm different to you Robin, I don't share you're passion to the same extent and normally when i choose a new car there is more than one option in my mind and for me Audis and Cupras are options in my mind.

1. - Not yet but have driven a S£ so assume it will be similar

2. - Yes, hard not too looks very similar to the one I drive at the moment

3. - Yes, but the older I get the harder I am to part with them :roflmao:

....Personally I prefer the plastics used in the Mk5 interior and don't like the Mk6 'add-on' silver bits which are tending towards bling.

+++

But the MK4 is the best...... because it has bespoke parts

Audi is a better brand whichever way you look at it, owners don`t need to stick noses up as its fact, Volkswagen are supposed to be the cheaper brand and now they have gone against their own policies.

Maybe a Audi S3 price hike is on the way?

Just out of interest, which bits are bespoke?

The Mk4 R32 my mate used to have didn't appear to have any bespoke parts? ok so it had different seats, and some plastic bits painted silver, but it seemed to be all VAG parts bin to me? in fact it shared a frightening number of trim parts with the Skoda Superb I had at the time!

The story goes that the Mk4 R32 was originally just a 'private' project by some of the VW designers/engineers and that they did raid the parts bins of course.

Trouble is that now the accountants and marketeers have jumped onboard and the original spirit of creation has been lost.

The Mk4 R32 is the one which will be remembered in history I reckon.

I agree that the Mk4 R32 will probably be regarded as the 'classic' R VW, but if you seriously believe the stories about a group of employees tinkering away at night building something special without the accountants then you must be on some kind of drugs!

The mk4 R was no less a marketing excercise than the new mk6 R is! even the Mk1 GTi was the same!

The MK4 R32 was a last celebration for the MK4 Golf platform.... yes Volkswagen wanted to make money but the agenda has somewhat changed since then.... fuel is up, higher taxes and the drive for more eco-friendly engines...... the MK4 was only available for 2 years if I recall correctly..... the replacements since then have been built in way greater numbers..... the MK4 started the ball rolling so now Volkswagen will continue to build more and more to keep the money coming in. I think the success of the MK4 even took VW by suprise. The MK5 was already announced when the MK4`s were begining to roll off the production line...... I doubt the accountants were as tights as they are being with newer models....

Off the top of my head......

Suspension spring by H&R

Shocks by Blistein

Exhaust system build and tuned by Austrian specialist Seabring

Seats by Koenig with R32 branding

R32 mats

R32 dials

R32 steering wheel

R32 gearknob

Unique alloy wheels

The above were only unique to the original R32 as far as I can remember...... and non of them were available as official options on lesser models. The Deep Blue paint was also unique to the R32, R32 and R50 which is no longer available on the new R cars :(

The MK4 used the engine from the V6 Phaeton and its brakes too.

Also had a quicker ratio gearbox and steering rack compared to the normal Golf.

Volkswagen will probably make a R Polo, R Tourag, R Passat etc....... we don`t know what Volkswagen will do.... but having bespoke parts makes the car more special in my eyes.... knowing youve paid for something a little bit different. Yes it doesnt subtract from what is a good car but it does add.......

The problem here is that Volkswagen are expanding the model..... and maximizing profits... so bespoke bits are a no no. They will share as much as possible between the R models..... seats, dials, alloys, brakes, engine, sills etc.

All comes down to what individuals want from a car.... if your happy paying £30-40k for what is a 2.0 engine then fair enough......

Its a S3 with a better body, cheaper interior but for more cost........

Riz :)

....That's why I started my post with the words: "The story goes" - Not necessarily meaning that I believed it. But now you have spoilt my dream.

I thought that everyone knew that my mind is the result of much drug taking

Hook line and sinker mate - the making of cars is nothing to do with celebrating a car for any mainstream model. It's marketing.

The sole reason manufacturers put out a better spec'd model is to retain interest in that model as a whole, to keep sales going.

Your right...... I guess I`ve not been thinking straight..... not driven the R32 for weeks now....... I actually took a test drive in the Audi S3..... I didnt like it...... this was before I got the R32.

Jon If you really want the new Golf R go for it....... its only money and if you want something really badly regardless of cost... do it..... I did it with my R32... saw the chance and took it regardless of cost...... you only live once.....

hitory is little strong. we will all remember it, partly because TSN was built upon the foundations of :.R but mostly becasue Riz will never let us forget it ;) The Mk4 is still the fastest accelerating car to 30 however ;)
