Right, finally managed to replace the useless Blackberry (small keys and duff scrolling thing) with an iPhone 3GS.

Which apps should I get hold of? Facebook app is first on the list. But what other apps can't you live without and why?

Can you only buy apps through iTunes, or can you get them somewhere else and then stick them in your own iTunes?

Only apps via iTunes, unless you want to jailbreak it im afraid.

Mboxmail - sync's to Hotmail flawlessly and is better than the built in support. I wouldnt be without it.

Sky News - Quick to load, easy to navigate

Ebay - quick to load , and check on your items

Google Search

Google Earth

Ones to bookmark, not really an app, they open a new page in safari.

BBCi player

TV Catchup

BBC News

BBC Motorsport News

Personally love Shazam for it's music recognising abilities.

Don't honestly see the point in Google search or Google Earth, as the pre loaded Maps app does everything they do, including streetview and giving you phone numbers for pretty much everwhere.

The 'Formula1.com 2010' app is good for keeping an eye on races you cant watch on tv, with live timing etc, and a live news feed from the track.

Sky+ app is handy if you have sky+ (don't think you do though).

Flixster Movies is handy for reviews of films and local cinema times etc.

Trism is quite a good game in a Tetris(ish) kind of style.

Profanity is amusing for a while.

iflight UK is great for live flight info.

My car Check is handy for putting number plates in and finding out what that bodykitted boy racer car actually has under the bonnet.

If you jailbreak it (i.e. run an exe) you can get anything you want. If you don't feel ready for that, everything has to come through itunes or the app store, erm, app on the iphone. Cambio I find v. useful for converting weights, lengths etc.; Beatmaker is awesome for making electronic music; Guitar Toolkit if you play; Weather Pro is pretty accurate; iMotion is fun for making stop motion vids; Autostitch for making panoramas from a bunch of images; Goodreader lite is brill for PDFs etc.; Guardian app is pretty good; Wallet is an encrypted password wallet; Echofon if you have a twitter a/c; Games: Doodlejump, Edge, FlightControl, Angry Birds, Field Runners, GeoDefence.

As an off topic note to this (Sorry Mook). I met a cousin of the other half last friday and he had 11 pages of apps..

He showed me that this was the limit of Iphones and it wouldn't take any after that or it listed them elsewhere:confused:

By the way most of my favourite apps have already been listed above but a few others

Trapster - for the location of those bleeding speed cameras live

1Password - for the security of getting into those dodgy websites you might visit

My O2 - If you're on the O2 network, for finding the latest state of minutes used, texts used/have left blah blah blah

TVGuide - Listing of tv programmes. Yes I do use it to find out what time the footie actually starts

0870 - Useful if you get those annoying 0870 numbers. Just punch it in and it'll connect you to a normal landline number. Hit and miss though

Dictionary - Dictionary on the move

Have to say I'm not a fan of the Opera browser by the way, find it a bit clunky, it is slightly faster than safari, but it won't let you zoom at all in landscape mode, and only has 1 zoom level in portrait, which is annoying when trying to read small text, or hit small icons.

Cheers for the suggestions +++

Shame about Opera Tipex - I use it on my work and home computas.

So (it's just loading latest software via iTunes) can I not select apps via iTunes and then load them next time I sync the phone - do I have to download them all via the phone?

No, you can do it how you want. You can download the apps either through iTunes on your computer or directly to the phone from the app store.

 this is fixed in iphone OS v4.0, it introduces the concept of folders for apps so you can have a games folder, utilities folder, 'crap apps' folder - whatever you want. It works really well on the Beta3 release I'm using but won't backup propoerly to iTunes as iTunes 9.1 doesn't support app folders, there will be a new release of iTunes when OS4.0 is ready to go +++

  • 7 months later...

As I attend a lot of business meeting as, I get lot of business card from many people. So I found it hard to manage them, at that time I came to know about WorldCard Mobile app. Which is my favorite and best business app as it can scan all my business cards into my iPhone contact list. And also I recommend this mainly for business app users.

I am not sure what he has done to get it. He downloaded something from a website and now all he seems to do is go to an app he wants then comes back out of it to the app he got from the website and it's free from there.

You are probably right, the most expensive app I have is monopoly. So if I done it I'm not exactly saving fortunes.

It's probably something like Crackulous, the similarly named Hackulous, Kickback or many more. They crack the DRM on apps but I just don't see how a store that offers so much software for such little money is worth risking prison for. The most expensive app I have bought was £25 but it was specific to my work/business and has paid for itself ten times over.

As CarMad said, with a huge selection of software at 59p - why bother?
