Moschops
Oh dear what a crock of turds this thread has turned into... Well hopefully I'm going to test drive the RS3 tomorrow... I will report back with "my" views on it to put it back on Topic. I have an RS3 order, having seen several now in the metal, I like it, I also like the S3 (8P) which Mrs Choppers owns, I'm not bothered that the 8P has come to end of it's life, times change and technology progresses. The RS3 fits my want's in a car, it may be old and the interior not that different, but I like it and it will tick what I want from the car. Hatch for shopping etc, 4 doors for taking the parents out for the day and the noise/sound factor for me. Yes it's not radical in looks, but hey that suits me fine. Yes it's not cheap, but look at the prices of other cars that could do a similar job, M1, Golf R etc, etc. But it's the Audi for me. ETTO

Moschops
WOW what can I say, this car is awesome, It's so much better than I thought it was going to be, even my wife said the last time I smiled that much at a car was when I bought my Escort Cosworth over 12 years ago... So the car was an Ibis White one, only three options, Roof bars, Rear Tints and Arm Rest and the rear tints had not been done properly as the rear most glass was still untinted on both sides... The look of it from walking up to it is quite an aggressive looking car with the standard deep Audi RS grill all finished in black. No other black trim on the front which against the white looks really nice. The front wings are rather flared to cover those massive 19" alloys and bigger tyres fitted to the front. The doors mirrors are the standard S3 alloy coloured jobs. The rear of the car was finished with a piano black rear diffuser and black chrome twin tails pipes exiting on the near side rear. A small rear wing extends out over the rear hatch. Again this was all white, but if you spec the silver/ally finish then the little side extensions will also match the front trim and also the top most parts of the door handles. The 19" Rotor alloy wheels really fill the arches and look the part, they'll also be easy to keep clean too. Inside is standard A3 fare apart from a smattering of RS3 logos on the gear shift and and dials. Missed the boost gauge display on the car...forgot to check it out..doh!! The steering wheel is a chunky affair with a dimpled finished, not to my liking as i prefer the smooth finish of the S3 version, but it has a nice overall feel none the less. This car also had the standard RS3 sports seats, no electric lumbar support on this car either. All finished in Silk Nappa leather. On firing the car up get a nice burble from the exhaust. On leaving the forecourt the acceleration is just awesome and unbelievably smooth, the 7 speed S tronic gearbox is superb, really smooth both on going up and down the ratio's. change down using the paddles and it blips the throttle The car really is a wolf in sheeps clothing, over rough roads it soaks up the bumps never getting crashy or riding rough like some sports hatches I've driven before. Round town it's really docile and happy to pootle along at 20 mph. Open it up and the 5 pot engine really comes alive and that lovely offbeat sound brings a big smile to your face. The brakes a brilliant too. We travelled over a mixture of fast dual carriage way, A and B roads and some small country roads. Both dry and wet, the RS3 took them all in it's stride. For those that know what it is, we got some admirable glances and a thumbs up, otherwise she just blended in with the other cars, for me I'm happy with that. So overall, yes I'm mightally imprssed and can't wait now to get mine. This todays car, these were taken last week when it was dry. Enjoy.. Some from Goodwood FOS A big thanks to Simon Jackson and the team at Stoke Audi for todays demo.. boxerbeat
I agree moschops! my test car was in white. Not my colour but the car is great. I'm trying to order one. I'll let you know how I get on. My only problem in buying the RS3 is I'll always want to be out in it and I haven't felt that way about a car since I was in my 20's. Good write up! SINGH
Great report, the car looks fantastic and I bet it goes to. The RS Audi brand used to be so much more special a few years back though, this just doesn't excite me like the RS 2 B5 RS 4 and C5 RS 6 did. theduisbergkid
Aside from the 5 pot engine, that car is about as interesting and stylish as pair of M&S y-fronts. Moschops, if you like it though, that is all that matters
Tipex
Aside from the 5 pot engine, that car is about as interesting and stylish as pair of M&S y-fronts. Ah, but wouldn't M&S Y-fronts be considered 'premium'? despite the fact they are no better than Primark Y-fornts? Moschops, if you like it though, that is all that matters Couldn't agree more, the write up is predictably, exactly what I was expecting it to be but as you say, I'd be buying a Jag XKR-S which everyone else takes the p1ss out of me for, so each to their own, and I hope the car lives up to everyones expectations, and is what they want it to be. I went into the test drive with an open mind as having read quite a few car magazine reports and slating the car has been getting I wasn't to hopefull it was all I wanted it to be. Having not too long ago driven the Golf R and a Focus RS, BMW 335 each of those car's didn't come up to scratch or I found something I didn't like and couldn't like with, in the Focus's case it was very poor build quality, Golf R didn't really hit the mark and the BMW a bit bland. So yes it bought back the smile factor for me, plus is practical for my needs. Oooo Jag XKR-S...nice.....

eldavo69
I want to like it, I really do! But . . . My company car is a boggy basic A3 1.9tdi SE and although an RS3 it is just an A3 with some tarty bits and doesn't differentiate enough. The problem I have with it is that the engine is the only exciting thing about it. If you're driving it then that's great, but there is no drama, no occasion and no sense of seeing anything really special when you see one in the metal. I still smile and pay attention when I see a B7 RS4, the RS3 just leaves me bored.
ashleywater
Fair point, but I am the total opposite, the fact it looks boring and like pretty much any other A3, is just a huge bonus, dont want the attention, or ultimately the attitude, that you usually get these days, driving anything that looks slightly fast or flashy. Q car, pure and simple.

Q car it is.. It's not just the engine, the S tronic gear box is so smooth it adds to the get up and go of the engine, the ride is firm but doesn't knock your fillings out over the slightest pot hole nor is it too soft that it bounces round like a space hopper:oneseries:. I gave it some beans from a side junction out in the sticks pulling out on to a B road just as I was doing so a car came barralling along round the bend but before he caught up we we're off up the road leaving him in the dust The point and squirt of this car great:) Don't just base it the current A3, this car is so much better and will really bring a smile to your face. Don't just take my word for it, go get a run out in one.

Mook
One of the reasons I liked my S4 was because it just looked like another A4 - until you floored it and then it went and gripped like buggery. I think comments about "it's just the engine" are wrong - it's about the whole mechanical drive-train. The gearbox is good, very good, although 7 gears is an emissions thing, not a driving thing - you just don't need 7! Just one thing, Wayne, the wings are wider because the whole front track is wider, so the wings have to wrap the whole lot Oh, and if you want a properly firm ride, I'll take you out in my track toy

ashleywater
Prepare to be bored sh1teless, but I had some time to kill so here goes: Clarkson tests the RS3: 1) Comments: Normal understeer / Powers Good / and so the is the Speed? / So is the noise / so is the 7 speed gearbox, provided you are at the Nurburgring and your families life depended on your lap time? Conclusion: Excellent drive train, and extremely quick 2) It's the problem with all these gearboxes, they are good when you are travelling fast, but in town they jerk? and for "Smooth driing" they're pretty hopeless?? Conclusion: Flappy paddle has never been an issue with you on any other car you have driven, why the whinge now? 3) Comfort, apparently there is not much as the suspension is set up for fast lap times, not as bad as other cars? But you do need to scour the road ahead for potholes? Conclusion: As other cars? Nissan Pixo or Ferrari Enzo?? Confirms that the car is fast again Also it appears that if you are driving any other car, potholes do not need to be avoided, mmmh strange that 4) Inside old fashioned and boring. Conclusion: To some, others would say well built and functional, but a fair point 5) Air con has 0.5 increments, instead of hot & cold?? Zoom facility on the Sat Nav, scale is too small?? Conclusion: Really scraping to find anything wrong with car, so has to resort to this nonsense 6) 1Mower appears to be the same size and price as the RS3? Conclusion: Really? 4 WD 5 Door hatch, versus RWD 2 door booted saloon, if you thought they were so similar why didn't you compare them directly in your TG test? As for price comparison, the RS3 is much cheaper in real terms, due to the provision of the following: a) flappy paddle V manual b) 4WD V RWD c) Sat Nav standard / sat nav optional extra d) 5 doors versus 2 doors All these comparisons, equal more money when buying any type of car 7) Apparently: you emerge from every trip in the 1Mower wearing an enormous grin. Conclusion: You either have a branch lodged up your ringpiece, from the "Waltzer" you have just pulled through your local greenery, or you have just sh1t your pants 8) And you emerge from the Audi glad the trip was over. Conclusion: The end conclusion, does really appear to reflect the content, I also have a sneeking suspicion, that he never actually drove the car,due to the content focusing on weird things like air con and sat nav adjustment scales FFS!, and the fact that he religously has his ugly mug pictured in the car he is testing, in this case it is quite obviously not him pictured driving, for some strange reason? Probably refused to be seen in an Audi, subsequently pictured and labelled as a "Cock" Tin hat, safety goggles and elephant hyde now donned. Mook
What I continue to fail to get here is why you're so incredibly defensive about the RS3 - to the extent you've got to go and find the reviews and drop them in here. And you wonder why people are bored of your comments
Tipex
And Clarkson has always berated flappy paddle gearboxes. You've clearly misunderstood (deliberately?) the reference to potholes too, some cars ride potholes better than others, yes it's always best to avoid them if possible, but if you do hit one, in Clarksons opinion, it's going to hurt, whereas another car may be more forgiving. I also fail to see why you constantly try and justify your argument by comparing it to the 1M? ok so for you personally, the cars aren't competitors, but for the majority of people, they are direct competitors, as given the choice, most RS3 purchasers would, I'm fairly sure, opt for a 3 door if it were available.
