RS 3 Tested.

And Clarkson has always berated flappy paddle gearboxes.

You've clearly misunderstood (deliberately?) the reference to potholes too, some cars ride potholes better than others, yes it's always best to avoid them if possible, but if you do hit one, in Clarksons opinion, it's going to hurt, whereas another car may be more forgiving.

I also fail to see why you constantly try and justify your argument by comparing it to the 1M? ok so for you personally, the cars aren't competitors, but for the majority of people, they are direct competitors, as given the choice, most RS3 purchasers would, I'm fairly sure, opt for a 3 door if it were available.

The RS3 rides them well, better than I expected, in fact better than my wifes old Polo GTI +++

my problem with the RS3 is as such....

everyone who actually knows this stuff knows that car makers make bigger profit on their performance variants than standard variants, on a per car basis. thats cos a v6 turbo aint 20k dearer to make than a 1.6 diesel turbo. its the same principles. besides the different lump, you get slightly bigger brakes, different suspension (but not necessarily dearer to manufacture) and bigger wheels bla.

with the RS3 you get feck all else.

audi marketing clearly making the best of polishing the turd by forcing the car to be aimed at an older segment (hence 5 doors)...older people more likely to part with 40k for a 20k car with 5k of mods (which is what I'd say an RS3 is) than younger people who will expect something more.

its insulting that they cheap skate over things like exhausts and rear arches and interior mods. and fools think they hold their value well. if so why are RS4s 20k and RS6s 10K? like all cars, they just die after a few years.

funny reading this thread though. its a 5pot turbo in an A3 shell. and yet half the reviews are like its a whole new car.

have you ever driven a bog standard A3 on the limit...they handle ok too. so does a bog standard A4. (apart from se) wouldnt exactly say any S or RS equivalent audi handled that differently.

but to be clear, i dont buy that M3s or whatever handle that much better than a 320d either. modern cars all pretty good. and a few springs here and there doesnt change the entire chassis or physics.

keep waffling to yourselves though. am sure its a safer place to put your cash than gold!

What I continue to fail to get here is why you're so incredibly defensive about the RS3 - to the extent you've got to go and find the reviews and drop them in here.

And you wonder why people are bored of your comments :coffee:

I am not "defensive" about the RS3 Mook, dont actually give a monkey's, just stirring the pot and pulling the chain of certain individuals, who seem only to ready to have a pop, at every opportunity, no names no pack drill

Apologies if reading the motoring press constitutes doing something "wrong" on a motoring forum, and then quoting them on a car specific thread, for a bit of craic and discussion.

I guess I should start the "RS3" is total and utter p1ss sh1te thread, over on the beemer forum for balance.

In your opinion of course.

In Clarksons opinion, a well respected and time served motoring journalist, who's driven more cars than you've eaten hot dinners, it doesn't.

Not to mention that a Polo GTi probably only has 15" wheels (if that) so it's positively going to disappear down some of the bigger potholes.

Oh, and do you seriously believe that your the one doing the baiting in this thread? :roflmao:

To be fair though, I'm enjoying this debate, as it's remained sensible, and no ones resorted to name calling yet, which is how it should be. +++

Sorry you've lost me on that one...

I don't like it. Not that anyone GAF what I think, but it looks very bland, uninspiring and 5 doors just says shopping car in Bandwagon White. If that was sat on my drive, I don't think I'd be that bothered about getting up early on a dry, clear Sunday morning to drive it. I'd probably wait until later and go to the supermarket.

I thought the RS3 looked very good in white - until I saw those pictures that Moschops posted. Somehow it just didn't look much at all. Stealthy, for sure, but I don't know at what point stealthy turns into bland.

I'm perplexed that they've not done more with the arches and bodywork. I don't believe there isn't an honest potential buyer on here who wasn't completely underwhelmed when they saw an RS3 in the flesh. There must be.

This isn't Audi bashing either. I don't like the 1M either and I think both are priced quite ludicrously. However, I wish any buyer the best with their new pride and joy - but the RS3 does look decidedly 'average' doesn't it?

My thoughts exactly.

P.S. For those who need five doors, for the amount of money an RS3 is going to cost, you could buy and run a proper performance car and a £2000 Vx Zafira. Sorted.

I appreciate there are other options, and I seriously considered looking at a 911 and something else. However two cars doesn't work us. RS3 primarily for wife, who ferries child but also drives a good amount of miles for work. So, it needs to be reliable, and therefore newish. Warranty also high on the list for the same reasons.

The cost is the cost, no new car is cheap and this is no exception.

So, one car and a compromise and this is the market we've looked at (Golf R etc etc also).

The RS3 wasn't overly impressive on the Fifth Gear test against the BMW 1M.

It was a lot slower round the track.

It looks like the wider front tyres haven't got rid of the understeer either.

5FWD - Dogfight: Audi RS3 vs BMW 1 Series M Coupe video from Fifth Gear

Agreed soulboy, but in essence any 4WD car is going to wash out and understeer on the limit around a race track, on the road it is a slightly different matter however.

I guess it all boils down to a test drive and seeing how it suits your own personal requirements, a 1M is not my bag, these days, as it is just to tail happy for me, in the test you can see Toff nearly losing the asre end on the track, just as the Stig did, in a more pronounced "off" on the TG track, sorry but I am a million miles away from their driving league, and there appears to have been a spate of 1M owners totalling their cars, according to various car forums, which it pretty understandable, given the nature of the beast, and TBH as the winter months approach, I am extremely glad of the all round benefits that the 4WD drive system that my R offers, and cars like the 1M, definitively do not, I appreciate that beemer drivers are much quicker than us tailgating VAG cocks, so I will leave the 1M to their superior driving skills :-)
