patently
Oh, this is such an easy question. One choice stands out head and shoulders above the rest. An MX-5, of course. Great car, well put together, looks good, handles superbly, Jap reliability,... but... well... err... there's just the small matter of me having no desire whatsoever to sleep with blokes. DanG
10% import duty on the price of the car plus the shipping (you can 'customise' your invoice to an extent)... And then 20% VAT on top of that. So you get taxed on your tax. Brilliant! Still a lot of muscle car for the money. Just very costly in fuel. Tipex
Import costs are generally around the 2k mark, ok so it'll be LHD, but what else could you buy brand new for the fully imported cost of one?
Andrew
Hoots? My tits are getting smaller thanks very much Yep, a lot of car for £22k. Still don't think I could bring myself to do it though. Sorry stooH! Anyway, buy from here - much less than £40k: American Car Centre

Tipex
Oh that's nice. Very nice Anyway, back on topic, who cares about import tax and VAT anyway... Yeah, just drive the f*cker back and leave the US plates on it, no need to worry about tax or MOT or insurance then!

Tipex
Err, I wasn't suggesting he shouldn't get one? I love em, and if I had the spare cash, I'd get one, although it'd be a struggle to choose between one of those or one of these two-
DanG
Re shipping costs, I pay £700 per car from LA. There is some (frankly amazing given they do pretty much nothing) charge by the UK handlers of £300 on arrival. And that's it. Oh, be warned, pick up your car the day it arrives though as there are more variable charges from the storage people too. Nothin documented and all paid in cash to a man with tattoos and a pitbull. Mook
The difference being... what, exactly? Now look. Despite everything that is touted around, you don't have to be an MX-5 owner to be a hairdresser

shao_khan
There is a TWR XJS v12 for sale near me and I'd love it, I have no idea why, but there is something about the TWR styling and modified V12 that I'd just like to own. Reason I havent gone down that road is that I'm fairly certain with the cars reputation it would bankrupt me. Similar to this only more 'tornado' red kind of colour. http://www.jagracing.co.uk/2007_0225glen0020.jpg
Tipex
The Lister was the king daddy of the XJS! a genuine 200mph supercar! -
cruiser647
I don't think 'just' the Lister version would bankrupt you. Any model XJS would! Bod here had a facelift version (1990+) and it was modified, but was always going in for something or other. He was always saying it was costing him a fortune. Then his partner got pregnant and he was having trouble selling it. Either asking too much or everyone knew they were moneypits.
Mook
A mate at college's Dad had a Lister XJS. Bright red, all the spoilers, ludicrously loud and sh*t yourself quick as a passenger squashed in the back! Awesome car
Tipex
I have a bit of a soft spot for the Lister, one of my dads mates had one when I was about 10, it was black with dark tinted windows, looked properly mean, but was the perfect car for him, he was a bit of a dodgy character! Gressy
One of two possibilities... Either a Ford Capri 280 Brooklands or a Holden HZ Ute. Would have posted pics but I'm shite at this forum stuff!
Tipex
Here you go - You could get a Turbo Technics version too! And the HZ Ute, pretty cool.-
garcon magnifique
An old workmate of mine has two XJS's. And an XJ! Yes he is skint. He took his older XJS to a classic meet in Brighton (from Liverpool-ish). He had to fill it up twice on the way there and twice on the way back. As he put it, the eleven cylinders that were working had seen more efficient days.
garcon magnifique
Now, the Brooklands 280 is definitely cool. Whereas the Tickford Capri was cool for about 2 months in 1986.
garcon magnifique
But the ultimate 80s cool/completely uncool beast has to be what Treser did to the Quattro...
Tipex
I've only ever seen one of those Tresser convertibles, and it was at a motor show many many years ago, the one thing that stood out was that it was red, and had a very red interior. Seriously, the seats, door cards, carpets, dashboard, everything was bright cherry red, it was vomit inducing! There are loads of hard top tressers about (well, loads in it's most relative term), but most of them don't look too w*nk as you could pick and choose the Tresser bits from the catalogue, so most people just took the engine upgrade, and maybe the louvred bonnet, and (thankfully) left the snow plough and other bodykit bits on the shelf, as well as the Tresser wrap around dashboard.
