The biggest problem I have with them is I don't think they're a particularly nice looking car. They have a rather Korean look about them in my opinion... Nearly-new would be tempting though. The biggest problem I have with them is I don't think they're a particularly nice looking car. They have a rather Korean look about them in my opinion... patently Posted June 30, 2012 Author Report Share Posted June 30, 2012 (edited) I'm not worried about what else the engine is used for, my Caterham has the engine out of a Fiesta So far as I'm concerned, the fact it is a Toyota engine is a good thing, makes it less likely to blow up. Another Porsche is tempting, but the nearest servicing for that is 25 miles away as opposed to being virtually on the way to work, and I'm coming round to the philosophy of lightness and simplicity... just maybe not quite as simple as the 7 (for an everyday car, anyway!) Whilst I know it's a reliable engine from a good supplier, and that the Lotus is a pretty car, with aledgedy superb handling, it just seems a bit 'kit car'. Caterhams are all the above too, but then they don't cost £70k and the overall package seems to represent good value. Now, I have never driven an Evora. I did drive the Elise (and the Elan with the Isuzu engine) and loved them, but again, did think they were pricey for cars that felt, well, cheap or even home made. I have got a bit of time on my hands next week, so I will have a go at getting a test drive in one - open minded to the concept so perhaps that will change my mind. When I was looking at Maserati I would have been making a 2 hours and 107 mile trip to Leeds every 6,000 miles or so! But I wouldn't have considered that too much of a problem. Not ideal, sure, but certainly not something that would stop me buying a car i really liked. It was more than fact they eat clutches like I do chocolate that put me off. Regardless of their mechanical reputation, I do think it's the best looking Lotus they've made for decades. Definitely better than previous Loti design efforts. Sure, many many years ago they had a few reliebilty problems, but thats like saying 'dont buy a new Alfa, it'll rust' which of course it wont these days. The new Lotus' are in a totally different league to anything they've done before, I'd have an Evora in a heaetbeat, it's one of the best looking cars on the market and has a proven and reliable engine/powertrain. Would my local friendly Lotus dealer suddenly disappear and leave without a convenient place to service it? I agree the Evora is a fine looking car, and certainly makes sense as a used buy. Thing is, though, they were part of a group with another marque at the same site, and are listed on the Lotus website as being an authorised service dealer - but not sales. So the plan would be to trek to Bell & Colville in Surrey to test drive & buy the car, then have it serviced locally. I'll want to talk to the service people before going ahead, though.
