Mac
I've been reading BMW Car, and they've covered the new F30/F31 330D platform. 258Bhp, 413lb torque, 0-62 5.6 seconds.... Wow! Interesting that diesels are coming on so much now? The above apparently returns 55Mpg too. I find that astonishing. We've a few 320Ds and while they're 'ok' they're not a car I'd consider. One with the above performance factors though could be interesting, if you can get over the DagAhDagAhDagAh...which I struggle with. To put it in perspective it's about half a second quicker than the outgoing 335, and has far better economy. That's a very tempting formula isn't it? I'm on target for 27k miles in my '3 this year. Based on current costs etc. that's going to be £8,121 quid in fuel at an average of 1.408/litre. So that's 5768 litres. So, let's assume that the 55Mpg is right, and that diesel is 10% more expensive than petrol. That's 2,272 litres @ 1.548/litre = £3517. A saving of 4,604 quid. Pretty substantial. I assume that servicing will be cheaper than an M3 by far would have thought? I realise fuel has come down a fair bit recently but the point is valid. I'm vaguely starting to wonder whether I should check out a diesel Based on current projected mileage my M3 will cost about 14k to run this year Taking into account I don't pay any fuel makes this liveable, and I think the security system and a few upgrades I've put on have skewed the year 1 figures, but even so it's a 6.5k real cost to me. I should stop reading immediately.
Andrew
But it won't look as good, sound as good or make you feel as good. Some weeks I only do 12 miles in mine but those are 12 miles of love! ETA - I won't deny though that the fuel economy is attractive.
cruiser647
Mac - try it. I think you will be very pleasantly surprised. The only nasty noise you get is from cold. When warm/hot they are soooo much smoother than before. The newest muliti-cylinder diesels are fantastic for both sound and economy.
Mac
I think I may The other option I have is getting a 'normal' car for the daily grind. I'm quite happy with the M3, don't get me wrong, but always looking for what's next.
Booster
I don't think I will ever have a car that isn't a six or eight cylinder diesel auto ever again. There is literally nothing traditionally diesel about my car. Currently toying with the idea of changing my wife's car and that will definitely be a six cylinder diesel of some description. You will never get an M car experience from a sooty as it would undermine the brand but the trade off for economy won't be far off I don't think. cruiser647
I think they're being hopelessly optimistic with the economy figure. Not really. Will depend upon how you drive and where/when you drive, but I am sure I could easily get that on my commute in that car. My current heavy A6 2.5 V6 quattro delivers 46/47 mpg (by calc) which is what the book says it should deliver. My mate has one of the last of the old 320d's and he tells me the thing delivers 65 mpg (probably on the DIS), so even taking into account 10% off, that is still great. He also lives in Battersea and is a seasoned Pharma rep!
DanG
Is there a price as yet for this? Also, will it come with the X drive all wheel drive system?

I had a 2 day test of the E90 320d (non ED version) - it turned in pretty much the same MPG as the Passat 2.0TDI I had at the time - low 40s MPG (44mpg on the computer, but around 41-42 in reality). Mac
I think they're being hopelessly optimistic with the economy figure. I'm virtually exactly on the M3 figures, so I assumed it was relatively accurate. Our fleet 320Ds are all returning in the low 40s, and they tend to get caned. Mac
Just thinking some more, I think I just dismiss diesels as being bland and functional. I don't have issue with that - I've had many bland/functional cars. I.e. ones that are utility rather than anything special. I may have some investigation to do
shao_khan
our 123 averaged 43mpg on a 25mile commute and small ammount of town driving prior to its acceident. the 320 cab we have currently is averaging just slightly more, and these arent being driven hard, by comparison my insignia driven in the same style is returning 56.5. garcon magnifique
Not so long ago BMW official mpg figures seemed to be accepted as being fairly accurate. I wonder whether by design or not all the clever stuff on the latest models delivers better results in the lab conditions of the official tests than on the road. All these latest engines that use stop/start and so on to achieve official figures in the high 50s and low 60s all seem to be struggling to repeat that on the road, whatever the manufacturer. Mr Man
If you cover 27k miles a year....a 3.0 6cyl deisel engine is a no brainer...Decent fuel economy...incredibly refined..bags of torque...and impressive on road performance...but my next car will have have a 6cyl petrol engine....modern multi cylinder deisel engines seem to have everything going for them...but imo they are a tad boring...impressive..but definitely boring....I would`t have said that this time last year but having recently driven a few cars with 6 and 8 cylinder petrol engines I now realise how much I miss not driving a free revving petrol powered car....However.. if you test a 330d or the Audi/Merc/Jag equivalents you`ll undoubtedly be impressed. ps...if you do buy a car with a 3.0d engine...make sure it`s an Auto Edited July 15, 2012 by Mr Man

Mr Man
Well if someone else is footing the fuel bill....I`d stick with a petrol engine...It`s definitely worth arranging a test drive in 330d though...even if it`s only to come back here and tell us what you think....The over-all performance and refinement will be an eye opener if you`v never driven a modern 3.0d powered car....They are true mile munchers...sit back..make yourself comfortable and ride the mountainous torque curve. CarMad
There is also the advantage of being able to go further on a tank with a diesel, I certainly can't stand filling up the longer between fills the better for me.
Chick
we've the 245bhp 30d in the X5 mated to the new 8 speed box and it's stunning. Donnington and back with little regard for fuel economy showed 37 mpg average, which considering the weight, size and speed we were doing is brilliant. I think the new generation of eco-aimed cars really are a leap forward, nice thing with the 30d's are they sound and drive brilliantly too

Yup, totally feel this one. I'm averaging about 500 miles a week, which on an average range of 200-230 miles is a pain in the ass.
gizze
The combo that is interesting me is the 245bhp 4cyl turbo petrol 328i with the 8 speed auto 'box, owners are reporting averages of 33mpg and 40mpg on a run without taking it easy. One US owner did an average speed of 68mph over 400 miles and was showing 42mpg, and that is US gallons too, so near 50 UK? I think most owners of the new 330d seem to be reporting 40ish everyday and mid 50's on a steady run.
Mook
Having run a diesel as a daily shiiter for the past 10 months, I'm a real convert, esp when you can get one that's as quick as the new 330d. Even the E92 335d remapped being driven like it's been stolen returns 45+ mpg, 50+ on a long run. There's nothing quite like flooring it and chuntering clouds of black smoke out the back as you pull away from someone...
