But aren't all new car prices just silly these days?

A fairly well specced 320d M-Sport touring is £39k.

A fairly well specced c250cdi sport estate is 38k.

A fairly well specced A4 2.0tdi s-line is £38k.

Almost makes the S4 seem like a good deal.

Problem is, used prices tell you what people really think they are worth.

Some 11 plate S4 avants with the right spec. are out there at just over £30k. Not that I have been looking!! :)

So you know an S4 saloon will loose £1800 a month in year one if you buy new, I just couldn't stomach that.

What is it?

Dynamic steering on the BMW lets you adjust the weight and ratio of the steering. Good.

Dynamic steering on my Merc is a variable ratio rack, loose in the middle tightening as you move further round. Bad.

So depends what it actually does I guess. I have looked for info but can't find anything useful.

When I spec'd up an S4 recently (yes I did!) I just included the quattro differential (which I think should be standard anyway). Didn't bother with the dynamic steering or suspension options because I don't believe they actually add enough for their price, and as hinted at already - a highly spec'd new S4 simply isn't worth that amount of money, whereas if you keep the options to a sensible minimum I reckon it's actually decent value once you've secured a sensible discount from list.

I have read loads of reports saying that the spring set up is far better than the adjustable air set up, so that would definitely be money saved.

For me it would be...

Black optics

S-Tronic

HDD Nav

Upgraded audio

bluetooth

Dab

Media interface

Heated front seats.

Xenons

Not sure what is standard, and what needs speccing, but wouldn't bother with anything else.

For what I spent on the A4 Avant I could have bought an S4 .... but I get the benefits of the options everyday but I wouldn't get the benefits of the S4 package that often i.e. the performance.

As always it all depends what you need from a car.

With regards the dynamic suspension - I added that for my replacement A4 and am really glad I did. It simply makes the car much more suitable for the wife's uses and mine. Again it depends what you need from it. Of course if you ever intend changes springs/shocks etc then stay away. I guess the same goes for the B&O is you ever think you'll tinker.

Scotty

Like you I like my toys and getting the benefits of them daily, you may remember i had an S3 with factory fitted SatNav in 2001. Also, I enjoy driving holidays to Italy and France, and love the idea of a performance car. Can't afford to have a practical + a sporty car, hence S4 Avant with toys...
