Luke
Are they any good? I know someone who's selling one. Thought it might be ok for the winter to keep fit.
Mook
Total waste of money. You'll do more good just running - use a treadmill if you have to, otherwise run outside like a real man
Luke
I kinda thought as much.

Maxyboy
Buy a turbo trainer, mind numbingly boring but very effective
Twinspark
I really rate cross trainers - no impact, but gives you a good workout. However... many domestic models are tat and even the Technogym stuff used in some commercial gyms is awful. Our V-Fit is OK, for a domestic, but it's bloody huge. Still nowhere near as good as the new Life models. But... I can burn at a rate of 1k calories an hour, without damaging joints, and toning up both upper and lower body at the same time. Mook
I really rate cross trainers - no impact, but gives you a good workout. Cardio. Which is no use whatsoever for controlling or losing weight. Are you seriously saying you stay on a x-trainer for an hour?
Woppum
I like cross trainers, always have. Why do you say they do not help you loose weight?
Mook
X-trainers, treadmills, gym bikes etc only provide you with cardio exercise (conditioning your heart), which does nothing for weight loss. You need resistance training (i.e. weights) or properly set-up interval training combined with resistance training to lose weight - permanently. Twinspark
Frankly, that's a load of old toss. I don't use a cross trainer for an hour - more like 15 mins. But it's combined with a bit on the treadmill, rower and bike, too. I do no weights at all. Ever. But I've toned and built muscle and lost weight. What really winds me up are those who go to the gym, lift a bit of weight, and think they've done some good. They haven't. They're largely really unfit, but don't look it. Training methods will always cause debate - but when I was running for a club and my county, very little of our training was on the weights. Twinspark
Ahhh, I've just realised why you think cross trainers are no good for weight loss or muscle toning. You've watched those people who jump on them for 30 mins, with resistance level zero and work them at about 120rpm. If you know how to use the programs properly, you get a shed load of resistance training out of one!
Mook
OK, so the test worked - you've done your research Interval training (which is effectively what you're doing when the load is increasing/decreasing in a controlled way) will work. Completely agree about twunts in the gym who lift weights and are as fit as a bad of lard. I know quite a few in our local gym
