We're heading off to a wedding in the Austrian Tyrol in September but plan a few days on the way in Munich.

It'll be a Wednesday and Thursday evening stay over - anyone know Munich that can suggest where to stay (nice Boutique Hotel) and any touristy things we should definitely do?

Cheers, TP.

Take my advice on one thing - you must, absolutely must, visit Zell am See.  +++

Oh and Mayerhofen.  That place is gorgeous.  And green.  Very green.  The old WWI graves in the church there have photo's of the soliders on them.  It is rather spooky.

I've been to Munich once or twice over the years... the European Patent Office is there

Generally, I go there for business and arrive late the night before, go straight to the EPO in the morning, and dash for the U-bahn to the Flughafen as soon as I've won the case, so the last time I did the sightseeing thing properly was about 20 years ago on my first visit there.  However, do look at the Cathedral, and yes the Englischer Garten is worth a visit (because it is a lovely garden...).  If you see an Elly Seidl shop then get in and get some chocolates, they are lovely.  The Neues Rathaus is worth a look, too, hang around to see the clock strike.

I've stayed at various places, the Hotel Admiral and the Four Points (on Schwanthalerstraße) are frequent choices but only because they are right opposite the EPO's two main buildings.  They're ok but nothing special although they both serve a good Weissbier.  Actually, everyone serves a good Weissbier in Munich.  Do make sure you enjoy the Weissbier, by the way.  I've also stayed at the Mercure Hotel Munich Altstadt (on Hotterstraße) which was a bit chain-ey but better than most that I've stayed at in Munich, very good staff and gave you a good breakfast.

Do not go anywhere near the Hotel Dolomit, possibly the worst place I have ever stayed.  I chose it because I had a hearing on a specific day (therefore no flexibility) and there was a trade fair on.  The travel sites all confirmed that there was literally one remaining hotel room in central Munich.  There was a reason why the last unbooked room was at the Dolomit!

If you're lucky then they might be starting to get ready for the Oktoberfest   (in which case, book hotels sooner rather than later!).

I've done Munich and the Tyrol in a long weekend. It works like this :

Go to the motorbike shop to collect rental

Get out of Munich ASAP

Ride all around the delightful Austrian mountains

Return the bike as late as possible and fly home

Simples ;)
