Booster
I bid on 1975 AB (birth year and initials) yesterday. Clearly there are a lot of people with the same initials as me that are 40 this year as it went for £4800 inc VAT and hammer fee! And I wasn't prepared to go that high for a plate that is ok but not brilliant.

Tipex
You can expect all plates that have either less digits than normal, or are clearly not current plates to go up in value, plates such as HAM 24X being a prime example, while it might not particularly mean anything to most people, it is a suffix plate, and having one less digit than normal means it is obvious to most people that it is a 'cherished' number. With the current style plates, there are no personal number plates any more, sure you can get ones than vaguely resemble something if you use illegal type faces, but they are all 7 characters long and don't have the appearance of being a 'cherished' number even if they are one, hence the older style plates that can be anywhere between 2 and 7 characters are going up in value. I do hope HAM24X wasn't purchased by a butcher intending to use a dodgy font, it wouldn't take much for it to read HAM SEX. Some of that post almost sounded feasible until you see that these plates with fewer characters: ABS 88 10 AEY 1970 AL 63 ASK 750 AT 2 AOS 77 ARD AYL 1A all sold for less than £4k.... As for there being no personal new stlye plates, just this year the release of the '15' plates created a load of new words - most of which will be held for auction WH15KEY BR15KET BR15TOL CR15TAL HE15TED KR15HNA - went for £180,000 today PO15ONS
Tipex
I never mentioned any values, some plates will always sell for more if you get two people bidding that really want it, I was simply stating that values will rise* because there aren't any short plates any more. Yes you can make some new style plates look like words as I mentioned above, but generally speaking, the shorter the plate, the more expensive, and all plates will now have 7 characters. *as they always have done, they are just rising a bit faster at the moment, supply and demand, there is no more supply (of short plates), hence demand of existing plates rises. bazza_g
I mentioned values in my original post as I still can't fathom how HAM 24X is worth 8k, to anyone lol! Compared to the other sales it's price looks very out of place.
shao_khan
I don't understand the Ham plate at 8k. And I;ve tried I cant see HAM SEX in it at all. I've a couple of plates R333TLE which has followed me around on cars for years now and a WAZ plate I kept when my clio died as it was worth more than the car!!! I just don't understand some of the valuations though.
CarMad
I saw what looked like STUGGS on a top end Range Rover today and yesterday DAMIEN (can't remember how either were made up there were fleeting glances) on what was a completely blacked out Rolls Royce. Massive Black wheels, the grill the windows the lot certainly no bling to be found.

Compared to the other sales it's price looks very out of place. Indeed, there will always be individual plates that go for a lot more money than expected, it only needs two people in a bidding war. My guess with that one is it's HAMZA X, I'm sure there must be quite a few people with the surname Hamza.

Tipex
No answer yet from Wops if it was him who paid £70k for "458 S" I know that whoever bought that obviously has enough money that they don't care, and that it 'might' be an investment (although it might not be if the popularity of the car declines as they get older, a plate like that will be too expensive for whoever owns a second hand 458 in X years time), but you could have two 458's rather than one and that plate! However, if the 458 Speciale becomes a classic in the next 20+ years, which I strongly suspect it will do - then the plate will be an investment. Last year the plate "25 O" went for £518k to go on a Ferrari 250 SWB

Last year the plate "25 O" went for £518k to go on a Ferrari 250 SWB Yep, that's why I said it 'might' be an investment, personally I'm not utterly convinced the 458 will become a true classic, sit it next to a 488 and the latter is so much prettier, it's got a hell of a long way to go before it's comparable to a 250! I think the 458 might go the way of the F355, an utterly fantastic car of it's time, sold very well, a bit too well if anything, got a bit common (as common as a Ferrari can do) and will never really become a true classic imo, despite it being one of, if not my all time favourite car. So having paid so much for the plate in the first place, I think it'd be an incredibly long game for investment purposes, the type of people who buy used 458's over the next 10, maybe 20 years probably aren't the sort of people to drop over 70k on a number plate for a car worth half that, all imo of course. How can you say the 488 is prettier with those divided side air intakes?? Take all sorts I guess lol! Comparing the 355 to the 458, you could argue the same about the 360 but we're not talking about a regular 458, we're talking about the Speciale - have you seen the prices of a 360 CS or a 430 Scuderia these days..? The Speciale will become a classic, no doubt about that - the pinnacle of naturally aspirated mid-engine Ferrari V8's - and not a turbo in sight...
