Risky! Don't ever let the mot run out.....

Completely untrue scaremongering of course, my private plate is currently assigned to a car with no tax, MOT or insurance, and yet it still belongs to me, and is perfectly safe.

I think Ian is saying you wouldn't want to spend £2k having to get a Pug 405 through its MOT just to get the plate off it, not that it is taken off you should its MOT expire.

I think I'm right in saying it's not an issue for you as you intend on getting the T1PEX-mobile back on the road +++

Spot on.  If your Subaru gets stolen / burnt out you would be in a right pickle.  The plate is assigned to the car, not to a human being, and you cannot transfer a plate off a car without an mot

Another disadvantage to the new DVLA set up where the offices have been closed.  If you were having problems getting the car through the mot you could at least go to the DVLA office the last day the mot expired and file the retention paperwork.  I'm not sure what you do with the new system - send it recorded delivery I guess so you have a date stamp?  At least that way if they take two or three weeks to process it that's their problem

I believe you have 6 months to move the plate post MOT fail. So not a massive risk.

The plate is assigned to the car yes, but I own the car.

There would be no pickle, while the DVLA do require a car to be MOT'd to transfer the plate in the traditional manner, in the event the car is stolen/damaged beyond repair you can still put the plate on retention by using the appropriate form, and as usual, the vehicle must be available for inspection.

The old "must have an MOT"  ruling seems to have been completely over-turned now according to 2 independant stories I have heard recently from 2 un-connected people.

Apparently now it is just must own.

Thats how I'd space it if my name was Rick Noble - I know its "not in line with DVLA regulations" but I honestly see nothing wrong with that - assuming its "R1 CKN" the letters are correct size, font, no funny business with letters distorted or screws changing appearance.

I did a similar thing with mine & got pulled!

No change in font, no distorted printing, just a subtle 1/2" additional space in one place & 1/2" missing in another, still perfectly legible..................GGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!! |Feckers!

The thread title is expensive numberplates, not cheap mis-spaced ones!  :P  :P

I don't think I posted the numberplates I acquired for the Silverstone round:

And at the back:

Needless to say, each time I returned to the pit garage, they had been re-arranged...

BAC 1T lives in Wilmslow. The car changes every year or so - I've seen it on a (proper) Bentley Continental, a Phantom (or two) and the current Ghost. He owns a well known bookmaker.

I think that's the guy my cousin does a bit of driving for.

Certainly have pics of him in chauffeur garb sat in a Phantom and / or Ghost - he said it was owned by a bookie, but I never noted the name.

As the Channel Island of Guernsey has only numbers, private plates are limited - basically the lower the plate number, the more expensive. It stops at '1' which is on the car of the Guernsey Governor.

This works though, spotted at Le Mans this year +++
