Dash Cams

Don't get it.

Yes, he was driving like a cnut - but why the need to tell the world about it?

What is it about people with dash cams?

Why not?  Feck him.  If he doesn't want to be all over the internet then he can stop driving like a cnut.

If your wife, kids or whatever had been in the car he almost went head on into, you're exactly the type of person that would have a very different opinion on this type of stuff.

Erich Honecker would be jumping with joy - dash cams are something his regime could only dream of, but are exactly the kind of thing they'd have embraced.

I will never voluntarily go around gathering evidence on other citizens of the country. We're under enough surveillance from 'official' sources, without every Tom, Dick and Harry wanting to add to it.

I wish I had had my dashcam today.

Driving to the office I was on a short dual carriageway with a 40mph limit.

In my rear view mirror (I was in the inside lane) I spotted a Subaru Impreza WRX approaching.  It stood out because it was in a light gold colur.  Rather unusual.

He pulled out and passed me.  I was doing around 40-42 mph at a guess in a line of traffic.  The outside lane was completely clear because most people turn left at the end of the dual carriageway and it isn't worth over-taking and trying to force your way in.

But he did.  Nothing particularly bad about his driving.  He passed me, I left a gap, he pulled in.  There was probably 100 yards between me and the car in front when he did.

Then, after we've turned left, we enter a 20 mph zone.  It is 20 mph because around 4-5 years ago 4 youths and young adults lost their lives when a car sped up the road, lost control, flipped over on the blind summit on a bridge and the car bent almost double around a lamp-post.

The WRX driver was in front of me.  We had to stop at traffic lights immediately after turning left.  The other traffic ahead got through them.

There are those annoying flashing signs that show your speed after the traffic lights.  Two sets of the flashing thing.

He travelled at 25-30 mph for about 50 yards after the traffic lights.  I recall thinking "he's finding this frustrating".

Then - bang.  He hit the throttle like a stabbed rat.  I have no idea why, but he just caned it.  As he passed the top sign it showed.....71 mph.  In a 20 mph zone.

If I had my dashcam, I'd have sent the recording to the police.  Just over the bridge is a bus stop.  At it were a group of mothers with toddlers.

The potential for carnage was very much evident.

I would have had no qualms whatsoever about showing what a complete cock he was to the police or the entire world.

Let's just hope that if you're ever victim of one of these scumbags - someone called Tom, Dick or Harry will have the evidence to convict them for you.  Because I'd like to hear what you had to say if they had the evidence and said "Nah, sorry mate, I'm not a snitch and you can feck off".

No, Eric Honecker would want dash cams that sent the data straight back to GCHQ with no user intervention allowed, and then filed the information against each citizen so that he could see where they had all been, when, and with who, to let him and his henchmen threaten and discredit anyone he happened to take against.  Honecker was a dictator whose state presided over the oppression and impoverishment of millions.  I despise him.  I despise communism.  I despise statism in all its forms.

I am also sick of being stitched up by incompetent ****s driving around irresponsibly and then claiming there is no proof when they are held to account.  So I've taken steps to collect the data I need in order to protect my own interests.  I control that data; no-one has access to it unless I agree.  It is the very opposite of a statist tool.  Today, I spotted someone being a prat in public and so, to check that the camera is working and to get the hang of selecting & editing the necessary video files, I popped the file up.  I thought people on here would be interested in a minor driving incident, so I put a link on here.  Obviously I was wrong.  Perhaps I had better stop talking about motoring subjects and start discussing football instead. Or old Alfas.

If, because of that, you want to compare me to a communist dictator responsible for the death of innocents, then you can feck off.  :coffee:

*shrugs*

Some people are shit drivers.

Some people are good drivers, but drive like dicks.

Some people are good drivers and drive defensively, courteously and don't feel the need to 'protect' themselves with a cam - mostly because in 20-odd years of driving they can't recall an occasion where a camera would have been needed.

Sadly, due to the number of people who claim 'if you've got nothing to hide'... we're going to end up with compulsory cameras. Recording everything - and, no doubt, reporting it back.

I know I drive like a dick at times - but I never put anyone else at risk. But it wouldn't stop someone in 'sports casual' attire filming me, and uploading onto YouTube, potentially putting my career at risk.

So.. in summary - **** everyone who has one.

If you can't tell the difference between private data held for the sole benefit of the data's owner, and data forcibly acquired by the State in order to oppress its citizens, then that explains a lot about the current state of the People's Republic of Wales.

If you can't tell the difference between me and a Communist dictator with blood on his hands, then I'm not interesting in continuing this discussion.

Can't you see that the proliferation of voluntary cams is just escalating us down the path to compulsory cams?

It's a slippery slope - soon we won't have a choice. And driving will no longer be something to enjoy.

You don't get it do you?  It wouldn't be the third party that was putting your career at risk.  It would be your actions that did that.

You can't hold anyone responsible for the consequence of the originating actions except yourself.

I do understand TS point in principal, big brother etc but if I knew I had a copper filming me 24/7 I wouldn't like it but I wouldn't be worried as I don't act like a dick, whether that's driving, leaving the pub, shopping etc.

I do get it.

What my HR department and what some self-important tosser with a dash cam consider to be dangerous or risky could well be a million miles apart from what I consider to be risky.

If I want to drive along a clear road at NSL + a bit, using the full width of the road, I want to be able to do without someone in a Rover 75 with a dash cam uploading it to YouTube and complaining about how dangerous it is.

I have been on the receiving end of dash cam footage already - I took a car out of our car pool at work and found it on YouTube, doing something that was a little iffy, but didn't pose any danger to anyone. I had to go to YouTube to get it removed, as it wasn't my car at the time of the recording.

If you drive a company car in a way you know is illegal (not speeding mildly, we all do it and we all accept the risk) and may upset someone, then you deserve everything that might happen. You know the risks and believe it or not it isn't what you consider risky that matters - it is what the law considers illegal. I'm stunned to even think you would drive a company car in a way you know is a risk and that you could get into trouble over.

On Mr Rover 75, unfortunately, as you know, you have no right to drive above the speed limit using the full width of road. Mr Rover 75 driver does, however, have every right in the world to report you. It seems to me that you just consider yourself above prosecution and fail to acknowledge any right that others might have. It is your way that matters, not the rights of anyone else.

On the YouTube item, I'm presuming you used the Privacy objection to have it removed. But then you say you took another company car and drove it in a way you describe as "iffy". Are you stupid? You keep pointing out that you know the way you drive is risky or illegal, but you fail to acknowledge any legal right others have to point that out!

I'll leave this now.

I'm quite sure I do 86, 88 or whatever on a motorway. Maybe I touch 90-95 on the late night stretches, but I doubt it. If I get caught though, I'm sure as hell not going to blame it on anyone except myself. So this isn't about innocence or pleading angelic driving styles. It is about accepting responsibility for your actions. You just seem to think that shouldn't apply to you.

The point is that, in my example of 'using the full width of the road' - it's not illegal. Being a bit above an NSL limit may well be, but we all do that anyway.

However, in the eyes of a typical dash cam owner, using the full width of the road when safe to do so is illegal (as, seemingly, is overtaking these days, too...), so it's a matter of opinions.

I should not have to adjust my behaviour to the standards of others because they choose to spy on me and upload video of me to the 'net without my permission, just to satisfy their own inadequacies.

I'm very well aware of the risks I take - and I'm perfectly happy for the police to pull me for it if they deem it dangerous or illegal. I shouldn't have to be also worrying that every other cnut around me wants to record and report me, too.

I've never seen any dash cam footage of anything other than dangerous, stupid or wreckless driving.

I've never seen any footage of anyone speeding a bit, or 'using the width of the road safely'.

If you get in to trouble, it's your fault, simple as that, just because your actions were caught on a civilian camera instead of a police one is irrelevant.

You choose to work for a company with seemingly draconian rules on behaviour in a company car, that's your problem, any sensible person would observe those rules and save the spirited driving for when they were in one of their several non company cars.

Personally, I work for myself, so I don't have to worry about any employer, but someone could report me to the council, which could put my taxi license at risk, hence I don't take that risk, when i'm in my cab, whether i'm working or not, I drive sensibly, courteously, and generally within speed limits.

If I want some fun i'll drive something else.

We see snippets of what people want us to see.

'Look - this reckless idiot 'undertook' me' or similar.

They don't show the previous 15 minutes of them hogging the 'overtaking' lane at 56.5mph.

That's the trouble with 'civilian' surveillance - it only shows what the owner of the camera wants to show, and is judged by their standards.

I just can't believe that anyone truly thinks it's a good thing that anyone can buy a camera, film the actions of others, and upload it onto the 'net.

How far do we take this? - with Google Glass style technology developing fast, it won't be long before everything you do in public is being filmed, analysed and uploaded to the 'net by some arse with a camera strapped to his head.

Fixed that for you

I don't use my GoPro thing for general recording of stuff or to catch people doing stupid shite, I only put it in when I know I'm going somewhere I want to record for specific reasons if that makes sense.
