I owned an E39 530i Sport that I so wished was an M5.  Still hanker after one.

I wrote two versions of this feature, I lost the first one (I tend to write when drunk and forget to save stuff), but it rambled on about my ownership of a 528se with 170k on the clock and a footwell full of egg sandwich baby vomit that I sold to a guy who racked up a dozen traffoc offences in my name.

Great cars, yes, but unless it's an M5 I'd rather have an XJ6 over an E39.

I'm getting one of these sooner or later, just can't decide between m5 or Alpina.

There are a couple of Alpinas locally, one is a very sad looking garden ornament that I'd love to rescue, the other is immaculate and very well cared for, both still look awesome.

Aren't Alpinas all autos and with oversized wheels? I can't remember.

I think they are all autos, but on a big barge like that, I'm not really bothered.

They also come in two flavours, a puny 6 pot and a proper V8, they look great, but I still think I'd rather have a proper M5, I just like the Alpina because it's a bit different.

Don't know about the E39, but the E60 Alpina B5 was auto-only but it was still lovely.  The auto box wasn't the standard BMW one, there were pushbuttons behind the steering wheel to change up/down, and the display showed which gear you were in even when in auto mode - i.e. instead of D, S, M1, M2, M3 etc you were shown D1, D2, D3,... S1, S2, S3... or M1, M2, M3...

I know of someone who once got 'baited' into a race with an E39 M5, in an E46 M3.

It went on along a long straight road, similar to Washington highway connecting Sunderland to the A1.  That road lets cars reach very high speeds.

The two cars, I am reliably informed, couldn't be separated.  Apparently the M5 was the lead car, closely followed by the M3, but the M3 couldn't pass it - but nor would the M5 pull away.

Madness, of course, but it sounded like epic fun.

I could never condone it and I don't think the driver has ever done anything like it since, but I can imagine what an adrenalin rush it was at the time.  Both drivers waved and gave the thumbs up at the end of the road, or so I understand.
