Audi RS3 Press Release

Back to the RS3 and the supposed invincibility of quattro in wintry conditions.

Some of you may recall I had an Impreza STI hatch a few years ago. That had 330bhp through a superior 4wd system, running on 'only' 18 inch wheels and Dunlop high performance summer tyres. And you know what? It was absolutely fecking terrible in the snow. The RS3, on fatter 19 inch rims and summer tyres will certainly be no better and it'll probably be worse.

The only advantage 4wd on a normal car with summer tyres will give over any two wheel drive car is initial traction to get moving on a slippy surface. That's it.

And therein lies the all too common misconception whatever the conditions. 4wd gives you better traction. It does not give you better grip. If you don't know the difference you probably shouldn't be driving a performance car.

Your only route to better grip in the winter is winter tyres. Period.

Do you remember our drive over Teesdale on the way to Drews wedding. That was slushy and wintery!

There has been a dusting of snow (or as the BBC described it "Snow causes hazardous driving conditions").

All BMW's are off the road.  They have to go off the road to overtake the Audi's driven by middle aged women doing 5 mph because they might "skid".

Seriously, I just cannot fathom how people think the millions of BMW's in the UK manage when it snows.  Yet they do.  At some point in history, someone has managed to create one of the greatest myths in motoring.

Useless having a BMW v Audi, a RWD v 4WD discussion involving road safety unless of course drivers are prepared to clear ALL the windows of snow and ice when they take to the roads to deliver their precious kids to school.....

Some may even take the novel decision to switch on car headlights in the dark too.....

Seat are launching a Leon Cupra 280 estate, which is basically a Golf R for a lot less money. Mmmmm

There was talk of Seat doing a Cupra R with 300PS and 4wd, which would be a direct competitor to the S3 and Golf R. The current Leon Cupra 280 is good value, IMO compared to some of the VW / Audi variants. The Scirocco R being a case in point, which retails at more than a Golf R, despite being 2wd and 20PS down on power. Edited by Cuprabob

5 pot diesels don't really sound any better than 4 pots though, and they offer no benefit, just worse economy, multi cylinder diesels in general just don't really make any sense.

If you want a nice sound, you need petrol and more than 4 cylinders!

I'm not sure I'd agree. The V6 Audi Diesel I had for 12 months was a nice sound when on the move, and I'd say the same about the straight 6 diesel in mine. Its got a lovely sound to it, not in all cases it doesn't but it certainly adds to the experience of driving the car not taking away from it.

And I used to like being in a colleagues 5 cylinder Volvo D5 thingy, again because it didn't sound dull and had a nice note to it, for a diesel granted.

My better half is getting the BMW with the 3cylinder engine tomorrow and I'm interested to see how it sounds as much as how it drives. +++
